The sleep department performs testing to determine the sleep pattern of an individual and a resolution to poor sleep habits that affect the lives and human body


Overview

Role Purpose

A Sleep/Polysomnographic Trainee works under the direct supervision of a Registered Sleep Technologist or a Registered Respiratory Therapist after having successfully passed the Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (ASTEP). While in this role, the Trainee develops competency in and helps perform basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions. They will also ensure care provided is safe, effective, developmentally and age appropriate while complying with all quality and regulatory requirements as well as quality improvement initiatives. Additionally, the Trainee will provide cleaning, processing and general maintenance of all sleep lab equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop skills in collecting, analyzing and integrating patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).
  • Develop skills in determining final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
  • Learn to select appropriate equipment and calibrate for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.
  • Develop skills in the application of electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Learn to perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
