CC017203 Interpreter Services Summary: The Interpreter is responsible for providing foreign language interpretation and translation to ACH patients and families. The employee must be able to demonstrate language proficiency and provide interpretation in an accurate, warm and caring manner, function independently, work under stressful situations, and work well with others. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides timely and accurate interpretation and translation to ACH patients and families.
Responds to request within 15 minutes of consult.
Proficiently interprets the information without adding in personal opinions or bias. Also reframes from providing advice during an interpreting assignment.
Demonstrates proficiency in writing as evidenced by quality translation of patient specific materials as well as educational pamphlets and materials.
Must be able to work occasional shifts other than originally scheduled or hired.
In the course of interpreting, educates ACH staff regarding cultural issues that may be barriers to care.
Maintains appropriate boundaries and works within scope of practice.
Demonstrates working knowledge of how to access other foreign language and hearing impaired assistance. Demonstrates working knowledge of ADA rules regarding provision of hearing impaired translator services.
Takes responsibility for confirming that the language request has been completed and the patient or staff received the assistance from the outside company as requested.
Follows procedures related to TDD equipment including retrieval of equipment once the patient has been discharged.

2. Promptly reports to Supervisor or relevant staff any concerning information gathered during the course of interpretation.
Reports to Social Work any patient concerns or identified social issues discovered during interpretation and does not try to address them himself/herself.
Takes initiative to follow up with patient or family to see if concerns have been addressed/resolved.
When advocating for the patient or family, remains respectful of other's opinions, roles, and scope of practice.

3. Uses time wisely and efficiently.
Uses time wisely when on an assignment. In particular, if there appears to be a long wait expected, the employee will perform other assigned tasks or other patient/family interpreting and then return to prior patient when needed.
Educates ACH staff as to appropriate utilization of interpreters and job scope/responsibilities.
Communicates with other Interpreters about interpretation needs for the shift and is able to problem solve with the team through barriers/conflicts in scheduling.
When not on an assignment, assists with 3 way interpreting needs or assists with answering the phone. Also works on written translation requests as needed.
During down times, makes rounds of foreign language speaking hospitalized or clinic patients and offers assistance as needed.
All other duties as assigned.

4. Takes steps to advance one's own professional knowledge, skill, and expertise.
Seeks out opportunities for education. Participates in educational opportunities made available.
Active participant in departmental meetings and hospital activities as appropriate.
Recognized by co-workers and hospital employees for high level of skill and teamwork.
Achieves certification during prescribed timeframe.

5. Performs administrative tasks relative to the position.
Enters daily list of patients seen and services provided into the departmental activity log database on a daily basis.
Participates in relevant hospital committees or activities as assigned.
Assists with education of hospital staff.
Develops positive working relationships with outside agencies who provide services to non English speaking patients/families.
Complies with departmental expectations regarding INSITE requests and Kronos transactions.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Required - Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university - Field of Study: Social sciences, sciences, languages, or English , or Or four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Preferred - 1 years in health care/medical interpreting experience preferred

CERTIFICATION / LICENSE / REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS
Preferred - Certified Medical Interpreter (Certification)

SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Required - Ability to pass oral and written exams which measure proficiency in interpretation between English and Spanish.
Required - Demonstrate excellent communication skills, and good hand writing/grammar skills, in both English and Spanish.
Required - Demonstrate cultural competency and awareness.
Required - Ability to perform multiple tasks at one time.
Required - Attention to detail, flexibility, and good organizational skills.
Required - Must be able to observe patient/families reactions in order to assist medical staff in their communication efforts.
Required - Must be able to respond quickly to requests for Interpreting assistance.
