Role Summary:
  • Responsible for the development and improvement of robust chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Responsible for preparing Technology Transfer packages for new product introductions at Baker Hughes plants or Tollers then monitoring and supporting commissioning.
  • Attends New Product Introductions at Baker Hughes plants and tollers.
  • Identifies critical-to-quality processing steps and coaches and monitors plant operators.
  • Interacts with Process Engineers to develop automated batch recipes.
  • Responsible for monitoring QC results, identifying trends and initiating improvement projects.
  • Technical lead for assigned Customer Complaints.
  • Liaises with R&D group to ensure new products are manufacturable.
  • Supports the qualification of new raw material sources though the completion of lab trials.
  • Reduces the Cost of Quality for the EH Manufacturing Plants by using Organic Chemistry expertise to solve or prevent production problems.
  • Improve robustness of plant processes by identifying critical to quality process steps and increasing controls.
  • Improve throughput by eliminating testing from processes which are shown to be robust.
  • Interfacing with SMEs and Production Operators alike to ensure that we deliver what we designed.
  • Identify trends in QC results and use them to initiate improvement projects.
  • Develop and documenting chemical process knowledge to support future expansion of the EH manufacturing footprint.
  • Support cost reduction by preparing lab batches to qualify new sources of cost-effective raw materials
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Lab scale chemical synthesis
  • Evaluation and optimisation of chemical processes
  • Liaison with Manufacturing providing chemical expertise to solve processing problems
  • Assisting QC with corrective actions to recover non-conforming material
  • Investigates Customer Complaints as assigned. Establishes root cause of defects.
  • Supporting New Product Introductions to the Kirkby plant, providing shift cover as required.
  • Supporting the transfer of Kirkby processes to toll manufacturers and other Baker Hughes plants, attending first batches if required
  • Leading new project introductions.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across departments and manufacturing sites.
  • Contact between lab and plant
  • Responsible for adherence to HS&E policies and procedures
  • Work with Purchasing to qualify new Raw Material suppliers.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • Any other duties as required
  • Gains familiarity with vessels and computer control system at the Kirkby plant and other Baker Hughes locations.
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree or Master of Science Degree or PhD in chemical science discipline
  • Experience of chemical synthesis within a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in troubleshooting Manufacturing processes
  • Experience in scale-up and new product introductions to plant
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in chemical process development
  • Knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and analytical techniques
  • Knowledge of scale-up and large-scale batch processing
  • Knowledge of chemical process development
  • Knowledge of chemical process safety
  • Knowledge of BHGE Global Chemicals chemistries
  • Skills in the use of SAP would be beneficial.
  • Skills in the use of Microsoft Office packages, including e-mail.
  • Six Sigma green belt qualifications and / or Design of Experiments would be beneficial
  • Project Management training would be beneficial
  • Practical synthetic organic chemistry expertise
  • Excellent communication skills; able to interact with senior managers and plant operators.

  • Ability to work in a team (both own function and across other functional teams) as well as being able to work on own initiative
