Job Definition

THIS POSITION IS COVERED BY THE TERMS & CONDITIONS OF A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENTA. Scope of Position:
The LPN is responsible for nursing care assigned to that position and directs others in patient care.  Demonstrates the ability to deliver care based on patient needs appropriate to age and developmental level. Is responsible for the daily organization of unit, patient care, and other nursing personnel with less experience.  Should possess a basic working knowledge of nursing principles.  Decision making limited by hospital policy and procedures.  

Inpatient Geropsych – The Inpatient Geropsych LPN will demonstrate the above functions listed in the introductory paragraph.  Provides direct and indirect patient care services that meet the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of patient care.  Meets the communication needs of patient and family.  Knowledgeable of a wide range of disorders; cognitive, emotional, developmental, social and behavioral.  provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of a registered nurse.  Performs crisis intervention.  Participates in the unit's performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Supervised by the Behavioral Health Nurse Manager.   Patient population to be served:  Adult to Geriatric. 6 months to 1 year experience in a psychiatric setting preferred.  Obtains and maintains certification in BLS.  De-escalation training will be provided during orientation or within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period.  Basic computer knowledge.  Excellent interpersonal skills.

Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

  C. Education Experience:
​Graduate of approved school of nursing and currently licensed to practice in the appropriate state.

Complies with the continuing educational requirements dictated by the Board of Nursing.
  D. Physical Requirements:
​Ability to handle heavy materials or patients.  Physical demands greater than moderate may require knowledge of use of appropriate equipment.  Frequent bending, lifting, and pulling require proper use of good body mechanics.  Often necessary to stand long periods of time and may spend most of shift on feet.  Requires close mental, visual, and auditory attention in all phases of patient care activities.  Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and visitors displaying a smile and maintaining a pleasant attitude.  Must be able to wear a respirator mask.
  E. Working Conditions:
​May work in high stress direct patient care areas.  Stress levels may be high due to frequently dealings with life and death situations, physicians, families and other healthcare providers.  Demands high levels of concentration and the ability to work in emotionally charged situations.
