A. Scope of Position:
THIS POSITION IS COVERED BY THE TERMS & CONDITIONS OF A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT
Responsible and accountable for the care of the assigned patients and who assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the care of the patient assigned to the unit, performs clerical functions, performs RN duties as assigned, and is able to communicate with the public, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
Functions: Functions as team leader, overseeing LPNs & CNAs assigned to his/her team. Directs others to assure care is based on patient needs, values, and choices. Practices autonomously within the scope of professional standards, the rules and regulations established by the Virginia Board of Nursing, and maintains knowledge of the policies and procedures within the system. Has a working knowledge of the nursing process and demonstrates skill in developing and guiding collaborative collegial practice that delivers safe competent care. Demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse cultural backgrounds of our patients and caregivers. Maintains current knowledge of evidence based nursing practice and possesses the ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process. Actively participates in patient care quality and performance improvement through data collection, aggregation and analysis of relevant indicators of quality, which results in the development and implementation of action plans to include the monitoring of the effectiveness of improvements. Serves as a professional role model as a caregiver, mentor, teacher and resource for peers and other providers.
Emergency Department - The ED nurse will demonstrate the above functions. BLS required. Will obtain ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period. In addition, completion of the dysrhythmia course as well as the cardiovascular drips course is preferred. The patient population served by this position includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. TNCC and CEN are also preferred within 1 year of hire. De-escalation training within 6 months of hire date, unless class availability dictates a longer time period.

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a minimum of an AD degree and is currently licensed to practice as a professional nurse in the appropriate state. Must be able to complete job related competencies as deemed necessary to the performance of the RN role in the nursing department of employment.
CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Conducts education requirements as dictated by the Virginia Board of Nursing
Maintains certifications as required by the individual specific department.

Ability to handle heavy materials or patients. Physical demands greater than moderate may require knowledge in the use of appropriate equipment. Frequent bending, lifting, and pulling require use of proper body mechanics at all times. Often necessary to stand long periods of time and may spend most of shift on feet. Requires close mental, visual, and auditory attention in all phases of patient care activities. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and visitors. Must be able to wear a respirator mask. E. Working Conditions:
May work in high stress direct patient care areas. Stress levels may be high due to frequently dealings with life and death situations, physicians, families and other healthcare providers. Demands high levels of concentration and the ability to work in emotionally charged situations. ]]>
