SCOPE OF POSITION
The Senior Accountant often has the technical expertise and leadership skills to move into a financial management position, may be waiting for a management position to open up, or may be working to further develop skills to be able to move into a management position. The Senior Accountant provides training and oversight to clerical staff and the Accountant I and Accountant II positions. The Senior Accountant is involved in the traditional general accounting functions of monthly close, account reconciliations, etc. The position, though, will generally have the more complex assignments and is responsible for providing training and guidance to other staff members. The Senior Accountant identifies process improvement opportunities to enhance the quality of service provided by the department and may be responsible for implementing changes (such as system flow) to accomplish desired recommendations to achieve the hospital's stated financial targets. The Senior Accountant is very knowledgeable of the budget process and is expected to recommend net revenue improvements and potential cost savings opportunities. The Senior Accountant may represent the department at both internal and external meetings. During audits, the Senior Accountant will often be a primary contact for the auditors and will be expected to review work papers prepared by the Accountant I and Accountant II staff for completeness, accuracy, and format presentation. The Senior Accountant is often called upon to assist the Controller and CFO on projects and is able to produce financial analyses with a minimum amount of direction and supervision.

This position reports to the controller, manager, or director of accounting, or CFO.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university, and a minimum of five years healthcare accounting or financial management experience. HFMA certification is required. A Master's degree and/or CPA is preferred.
