Summary

A full-time position is available immediately in the Ray Lab at the BCM Department of Neuroscience. The Ray laboratory studies how the brain's regulation of breathing is disrupted in congenital disorders such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, and respiratory infections such as COVID-19 using genetically engineered mouse models. 

Job Duties
  • Carry out independent experimental work. 
    • Cellular based assays/cell culture work
    • Molecular based assays
    • Animal (Mouse) physiology assays
  • Plans and organizes administrative operations of the laboratory. 
    • Manages ordering and purchasing for the lab
      • Interface with vendors
      • Seeks competitive pricing quotes
      • Reconciles purchasing receipt
    • Ensures an organized working environment
      • Manage equipment upkeep and repairs of equipment
      • Ensures stocks of consumables and reagents are maintained
      • Ensures lab duties across all personnel are complete
      • Oversee institutional compliance (IACUC, Env. Health & Safety, Biosafety, etc.
      • Prepare annual reports
      • Write up protocol amendments
      • Manage in person and virtual inspections
  • Perform mouse colony maintenance. 
    • Weaning, husbandry, and colony maintenance 
    • Genotyping
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Five years of relevant experience, with prior supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.
  • The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with experience in any field of neuroscience, physiology, molecular or cell biology, genetics or related field, with a strong understanding of mouse genetics.
  • Good organizational skills, excellent record keeping, attention to detail.
  • Demonstrable management experience and the ability to work well with others. 
  • Direct experience handling and working with genetically engineered lab mice.
  • Experience with basic immunohistological laboratory techniques including tissue harvest and processing, thin section microscopy.
  • Experience with basic molecular laboratory techniques including PCR, recombinant plasmid DNA.
