An Imager is a hands-on, highly skilled position that operates and maintains various prepress and production equipment in order to process customer files to produce proofs and plates for final print job. This position requires a computer literate, technology savvy individual that is able to troubleshoot and remedy various situations including but not limited to file errors, workflow/software adjustments, hardware complications, etc. An Imager is responsible for the high-quality success of our commercial print customers. This position will work directly with commercial print customers as a customer service representative to provide phone support to any technical or training issues to fit the customers needs and a liaison to schedule a higher level on-site support session if needed. An Imager is responsible for the technical pagination and output of the flagship paper, The Eagle, which includes the daily layout and composing of classifieds.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Paginating/Composing Classifieds and ROP pages for The Eagle
Filing and maintaining archives of PDF pages for The Eagle
Communicating with customers including but not limited to…deadlines, instructions, guidelines, procedures, etc.
Providing customers with phone support for technical or training issues
Receiving and processing of PDF pages throughout the prepress process…
Preflight: Using software to ensure PDF is made properly and will not error out during the RIP process
Verification/Correction:Visually checking the PDF and images to ensure they are set to Newspaper standards; proper resolution, CMYK color mode, Fonts embedded/no font encoding problems, page is not notably concerning; none to minimal 4 color black. If page does not meet standards, customer is notified and corrections are made by the customer or from the direction of the customer by an imager.
Imposition: Pages are paired and imposed to properly print on press with the appropriate collect/straight mode and web width and page size
Proof:Proofing of color plates/sheets to provide pressman with a proof to match
Plate:The burning of the TIFF image via the Arkitex software onto a printing plate through the CTP machines
Quality control - Verify printed copy of all publications to press order and color/registration quality
Interpreting and resolving messages on the prepress equipment; Nela Vision bender, Advantage CTP and processor, Newsdrive software, Arkitex Producer software, Newscolor proofing software
MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Adding plates to CTP machines
Clearing slip-sheets from CTP machine
Upkeep and management of the files on prepress servers
Keeping of a tidy work space
Assists in special projects as needed
All other duties as assigned.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite; Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator
Proficient with FTP client programs
Proficient with Mac OSX and Windows OS
High degree of troubleshooting skills
Able to consistently follow a set of procedures and instructions
Attention to detail a must
Able to lift 15lbs
Able to work as a team as well as independently or with minimal supervision
Able to follow all Company policies and procedures including but not limited to attendance standards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED
Must be able to read instructions and labels on product.
Must be able to hear well enough to communicate with co-workers and vendors.
Must be able to operate PC and phone system.
