The Omaha World-Herald seeks an experienced,
self-starting reporter to join our Metro Issues team to help identify key
topics and challenges in the metro area of nearly 1 million people, which
includes Omaha proper, a city of nearly 600,000 and its suburbs. We seek to
identify key issues in the community, do strong modern journalism about them
using all of our tools, including data reporting, video and old-fashioned shoe
leather and storytelling, and hold institutions accountable for action. You've
got to be comfortable with taxes and budgets. You'll be part of a team of
reporters keeping a finger on the pulse of metro Omaha to find that big stuff
that our audience needs to know to go about their daily lives, focusing on
these questions:

  • How is the government spending their money?

  • How should they spend their free time?

  • How will an issue affect how they raise their families?

  • Where will they live, work, shop and play?

To find these stories, you'll have to be out in the communities. People will have to get to
know you. You'll have to get to know people. So, yes, you'll still be attending
city council meetings, but maybe you'll just take notes and keep abreast of
what people are talking about to pick out important themes that will feed later
big stories. You'll need to be facile with data, so you can take those ideas
and come back to the office to dig into statistics to put ideas into context.

of interest. Conceives of photo and graphics ideas and collaborates with visual
journalists and is able to take iPhone photos and simple video to help
illustrate stories. Must be able to cover night meetings and to work the
    occasional weekend shift.

  • Uses social media in reporting and breaks news via Twitter and other means.

  • Uses audience analytics to guide and inform reporting efforts.

news site. Proven ability to write clearly, accurately and meet deadlines in
    multiple platforms.

  • Comfortable using a smartphone, other digital tools and social media to push out news and
    visuals quickly and engage readers.
