Director of Nursing Surgical Services - Battle Creek

Bronson Battle Creek is a Level III Trauma Center . We have Nine physical operating rooms with seven operating rooms used daily to serve the following surgical specialties: Robotics (Gen, Gyn, Uro), General, Gyn, Ortho, ENT, Plastics, and Urology as well as one pressure procedure room. The Surgery team includes: Manager of Nursing, Unit Coordinator, Registered Nurses, Scrub Technologist, Scrub Tech First Assists, RN First Assists, Surgical Aides, Surgery Schedulers, Surgery Anesthesia, and Specialty Coordinators.



Must have past OR experience and MBA preferred.



Working with the Vice President/Chief Nurse Executive is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the operations of the department. Assignments are typically in the form of broad goals and/or areas of responsibility with little functional guidance. Incumbents have substantial latitude in setting objectives and deciding how to proceed. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.


Master's degree in Nursing, Administration, or Business required. 5-7 years progressively more responsible experience (should include management of one or more areas of medical services at the department head level) in healthcare required. Certification in specialty preferred.


Membership in professional organization related to area preferred • Must have working knowledge of nursing standards • Basic word processing, and spreadsheet skills. • Interacts with top management, important outsiders, and others in situations where major policy matters, programs, employee relations issues and operational affairs are discussed and/or decisions made. Contacts require considerable tact and communication skills in order to negotiate with, gain the acceptance of and/or change the thinking of others in difficult and complex situations Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time. Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects. • Participates in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making. o Works with managers accountable to the director and members of the medical staff as appropriate in the development of goals and plans for the organizational components for which he or she is responsible. o Develops, approves, and (when necessary) secures approval of policies designed to ensure the attainment of agreed-upon goals for areas of responsibility. Ensures the development of the procedures necessary to implement approved policy. • Facilitates participation of staff in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making o Provides guidance and support to the unit shared governance councils in implementing decisions that improve patient care, patient safety and increases professional practice. o Provides resources necessary for implementation of shared governance activities • Accepts organizational accountability for services provided to recipients. o Collaborates and consults with the Medical Directors and other departments/services as appropriate to solve operations problems and to improve services to the medical staff. o Receives and investigates all customer feedback concerning the department and its personnel. Takes appropriate corrective action if necessary. Ensures that services are at all times provided in a considerate and courteous fashion. • Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of care. o Responsible for the development, implementation and continuous organizational quality performance improvement in areas they are responsible for. o Ensures that all quality control test and procedures are conducted and documented. o Monitors care of multi-cultural patients, and facilitate changes to improve delivery of patient care as needed. • Provides guidance for and supervision of personnel accountable to the nurse director. • Coordinates nursing services with the services of other health care disciplines. o Responsible for promotion/marketing of departmental services to all relevant customers. o Participates in a variety of ad hoc and ongoing committees. o Advocates for rights of patients and families ensuring fair and ethical treatment. • Participates in the recruitment, selection and retention of personnel. o Hires and mentors managerial personnel accountable to the director and advises them in planning the appropriate staffing for their areas of responsibility. Utilizes patient acuity and staff preparation to ensure appropriate scope of practice is maintained for each job classification. o Promotes retention of personal through recognition of positive performance o Evaluates, develops and (when necessary) disciplines and discharges subordinates. • Assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel. Assignments reflect appropriate utilization of personnel taking into account patient acuity and staff preparation. o Ensures that nursing staff members are working within their legal scope of practice. o Directs the design and establishment of appropriate management control procedures to monitor work volume, efficiency standards, the quality of services provided and other management concern for areas of responsibility, Reviews records and reports and initiates corrective actions, requests special analyses and or changes control procedures when necessary. o Responsible for the development of an effective departmental organizational structure including (a) efficient work flow patterns, (b) delineation of duties/responsibilities, (c) suitable staffing levels, (d) appropriate supervision, and (e) mechanisms for timely communication of pertinent information. • Assures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing professional development for personnel. • Evaluates performance of personnel. • Participates in planning and monitoring the budget for their defined areas. o Develops and secures approval of a coordinated budget for areas of responsibility, and guides managers accountable to the director in the development of their budgets as necessary. o Administers or delegates the administration of budgets, approving expenditures, reviewing reports, etc. • Participates and involves the nursing staff in evaluative research activities. • Foster a climate conducive to educational experience for nursing and other students. • Fosters peer review. • Remains abreast of the developments in the field of nursing and management by pursing a program of self-development. Initiates the integration of advancements when practicable and cost effective.
