Title
Respiratory Therapist Children's Hospital 72hr/pp 7p-7a

Under general supervision and according to physician prescription and/or established policies and procedures, initiates and administers respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies.  Respiratory therapists must be well versed in the theory and application of ventilatory devices, medications, respiratory treatment modalities, hemodynamics, non-invasive monitoring systems and cardiopulmonary physiology.  Therapists are required to direct and oversee the activities of assistants or students who may be assigned to work with them performing certain technical aspects of their job.


BBC:   


  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy, Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent. BLS certification required within 3 months of hire, ACLS, PALS, NRP certification required within 1 year of hire.
  • Performs and analyzes arterial blood gas samples, performs bedside spirometry and other diagnostic modalities adhering to standards of accrediting agencies (CAP, Joint Commission, etc.).

BMH


  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy, Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent. BLS certification required within 3 months of hire ACLS certification required within 1 year of hire. PALS and NRP certification required within 1 year of hire for children specialty areas.
  • The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for all aspects of patient care while transporting patients both to and from Bronson facilities.
  • Provides constant observation throughout transport process to ensure safety and well-being of patient.
  • Collects patient vitals and records as necessary to document physical condition.
  • Communicate with physician and other members of care team as necessary if patient's assessment data is outside normal parameters for individual situation.
  • Must be able to assist with patient transport via walking/running, and/or vehicular ambulance.
  • Performs and analyzes arterial blood gas samples, performs bedside spirometry and other diagnostic modalities adhering to standards of accrediting agencies (CAP, Joint Commission, etc.).

Hyperbaric Department:


  • As part of orientation, completion of a National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) or American College of Hyperbaric Medicine (ACHM) approved Hyperbaric Medicine Course.

    • Performs treatment and testing by policy and provider order, including: HBOT treatments, wound care, glucometer testing, Transcutaneous Oxygen Measurements, and other related duties as assigned                  

    • Serves as a clinical/technical resource in HBOT to nursing and medical staff. Develops and presents in-service education programs as requested by Manager or Clinical Coordinator.                                                   

    • Participates in department process improvement activities as requested by the Manager or Clinical Coordinator.                                                                                                                                                                     

    • Maintains a safe environment in the hyperbaric facility for patients and staff and uses approved and recognized decompression procedures for all persons with a hyperbaric exposure to inert gases.               

    • Evaluates hyperbaric chamber equipment/supplies used in the chamber and ensures that they meet all safety requirements before they are permitted in the chamber.                                                             

    • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technology, equipment, procedures, and educational issues in Hyperbaric Medicine.



BLH and BSH:  


  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent and 6 months clinical experience required, Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • BLS certification required within 3 months of hire, ACLS, PALS, NRP certification required within 1 year of hire.    
  • Assesses patients' respiratory needs using basic and advanced assessment skills including chart/monitor review and physical assessment. 
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with other members of the healthcare team regarding all aspects of patient care including results of assessments/evaluations and suggestions for changes to care.
  • Provides assistance with patient and family education along with other members of the healthcare team.
  • Assists nursing in the delivery of care for all patients by responding to call lights and performing ADLS. (Performs as the expert in Respiratory Care).
  • Performs basic and advanced emergency and therapeutic procedures for neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients by order of the physician.
  • Initiates, maintains, and discontinues mechanical ventilation for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients within his/her scope of practice.
  • Monitors and maintains respiratory care equipment including assembly and troubleshooting.
  • Performs necessary measurements/calculations and assessments to assist in determining appropriate care of the patient.

BSH:


  • Assists in stress lab with patient vital signs or giving lexiscan to patient.
  • EKGs for outpatients.
  • Hook patient up with event monitors, and overnight pulse ox.

Bronson at Home:


  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy, Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent.
  • Current driver's license in the state of Michigan and proof of insurance required.
  • Driving your own vehicle on a regularly scheduled basis to perform business on behalf of Bronson is required for this position and will require successfully pass of MVR check after an offer of employment has been made but prior to the employee's start date. Proof of valid auto insurance on that vehicle that will be driven while on duty for Bronson is required. It is the employee's responsibility to submit auto insurance renewals before current coverage expires to their supervisor. It is also the employee's responsibility to update their auto insurance coverage with Bronson if a different vehicle will be driven to perform business on behalf of Bronson.

Physician Practices:


  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy and 6 months clinical experience required, Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent.

All Bronson sites:


  • Current Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by National Board for Respiratory Care is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is required for anyone hired after 2004.
  • Current Respiratory Therapist license in the state of Michigan.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to constantly communicate both verbally and in writing. 
  • Activities and treatments must be recorded in an accurate manner and technical information and instructions must be communicated to patients, families, and all members of the care delivery team. 
  • Excellence in internal and external customer service must be demonstrated.
  • Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time. Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required. 
  • Performs as an integral part of the patient care team.
  • Provides assistance with the education of students and other members of the healthcare team regarding respiratory care.
  • Performs arterial blood gas samples, performs bedside spirometry, EKG'S as assigned and other diagnostic modalities adhering to standards of accrediting agencies (CAP, Joint Commission, etc.). 
  • Performs and assists with Outpatient Procedures and testing.
  • Actively participates in departmental quality assurance and hospital-wide organizational performance improvement activities. 
  • Maintains clinical and professional competency based upon established standards of practice.
  • Demonstrates the ability to achieve the desired work result effectively and efficiently with the minimum of time and resources.  Evaluated through peer review, observation, etc.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Demonstrates adherence to the standards as provided in the Bronson “Commitment to Customer Service” ,i.e., Commitment Statements, Quality Service Standards and the Interaction Process which includes the Service Recovery “AAA Action Plan”.  Data gathered via observations, customer surveys, and other written and verbal feedback from customers.


AGE SPECIFIC (Direct patient care jobs only.): The employee must be able to demonstrate the competencies necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the population served.  Data gathered from observation and department record.
