The Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics, seeks a Java application developer to join its small IT team. This individual will primarily spend their time maintaining and adding new features to Cube, ICERM's participant management and reporting system. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in both Java and MySQL and be comfortable with DevOps practices in an informal Agile environment. Success in this role requires a person who is comfortable interacting with non-technical users in order to understand their business processes and system requirements as well as convey technical information to them. They will proactively seek solutions, suggest opportunities for improvements to systems, and independently complete tasks without direct guidance.

The Application Developer's duties include:

Develop Web Applications – Communicate with staff and program participants to understand their business needs and areas for potential improvement. Collaborate in the full lifecycle development of technologies based in Java and MySQL. Use current languages and methodologies to develop and maintain software for internal and external end users while adhering to best practices in Application architecture, Agile development, and version control.

Manage and Maintain Databases - Develop and maintain automated and reusable routines for extracting requested information from database systems. Work with staff, participants and external stakeholders to build web service systems to match their business processes. Develop and maintain back-end database interfaces to web applications. Continuously identify areas for improving data integrity/validity. Manage security and access to various web services and back-end data systems.

Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in MIS, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, 1-3 years of experience preferred.

Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a complex, fast paced, dynamic team environment with competing demands.

Ability to interact with nontechnical staff and communicate technical concepts.

A strong foundation in Java.

A strong foundation in MySQL.

An understanding of Object Oriented modeling and programming.

An understanding of systems analysis and functional design practices.

A willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.

Background Check: Criminal and education verification.

This position has an end date as it is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. ICERM's current funding ends on 8/31/2020 and we are currently expecting a favorable outcome while in the renewal process for another 5 years.

This Position:

  • Frequently operates a computer and other office equipment such as a printer/copy machine.
  • Frequently moves about inside the office the office to access printer, files, and other materials/equipment.
  • Frequently moves about campus to various locations for meetings.
