The Multidisciplinary Teaching Laboratories (MDL) at Brown University is a dynamic space that facilitates active life sciences learning for thousands of students annually. On average, 2,400 students participate in laboratory exercises in the MDL every year including high school and middle school students enrolled in the summer through the Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Summer/Winter Programs and undergraduate students enrolled at Brown year round. The Director of the MDL provides leadership and oversight of both the MDL and Drosophila Media Prep Facility - two core support facilities of the Division of Biology and Medicine. The MDL's mission is to provide high level technical and instructional support to the faculty and academic staff teaching laboratory courses in the facility and engaging with the facility to train future students in laboratory settings. The Director oversees a team of professional staff who provide the necessary solutions, media, supplies, scientific instrumentation, consultation and technical expertise for courses, co-curricular offerings, student experiments, and investigations. This is accomplished through high level planning, resource allocation, clear communication and close collaboration with faculty and academic staff on teaching needs. The Director is responsible for the administrative and budget oversight of the academic year courses taught in the MDL and works closely with the Division of Pre-College and Summer/Wintersession Undergraduate Programs to coordinate summer/winter offerings in the facility. The Director works closely with the Associate Deans of Biology Undergraduate and Graduate Education to build and post teaching assistant appointments and administer the hiring process for teaching assistants and ad hoc non-regular instructors/faculty teaching for the Program in Biology. The Director has oversight of the Drosophila Media Prep Facility ensuring consistent, high quality, media production that meets the needs of the research community. The Director is a member of the Senior Associate Dean of Biology Education's leadership team and in this capacity plays a key role identifying opportunities to ensure the Program offers evidence based laboratory courses and training.
Education and Experience:
Required: Bachelor's Degree with 8-12 years of related experience with significant experience at the management level.
Preferred: Master's Degree with 6-10 years of related experience in a research and/or lab teaching environment.
Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
Documented fiscal accounting experience
Documented laboratory management experience
Strong management/leadership skills
Ability to effectively communicate to all members of the community at every level
Experience with Workday and FileMaker Pro strongly desired
Computer proficiency including word processing & databases
Strong fiscal management skills
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle competing multiple priorities effectively
Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
Background and education check required.
