Lab Assistant II - Full Time - Days
Responsible for skillful and appropriate processing, testing, storage and transport of laboratory specimens. Records all outpatient lab orders and assist outpatient nursing services with order entry of patient specimens. Processes routine send-out processing for reference laboratory work; assist with inpatient specimen processing and ordering if needed. May assist nursing service in the patient care areas with order entry, collection and testing for patient specimens. Testing personnel as a generalist or in a specialized area within the lab. Responsible for organizing work load as assigned. Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians and peers. Displays conduct in support of CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial Mission & Vision.

Perform test order entry and patient registration.
Processes, transports and distributes blood and other samples for in-house testing and/or send out to reference labs, and Ensures appropriate specimen storage.
Responsible for responding to inquiries, and reference laboratories regarding test orders, specimen requirements and reporting.
Assist in training new employees and clinical personnel on specimen collection.
Performs routine clerical duties and computer functions associated with processing patient samples and results.
Answers the phone, receives and disseminates verbal and written communications related to laboratory services or personnel in a confidential manner.
Assists with data collection for quality assurance.
Assist in the accessioning of specimens, retrieves surgical pathology slides and blocks upon request.
Completes all required safety training programs, general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards as required.
Collaborates effectively with lab co-workers to manage personal overtime for balanced productivity.
Recognize and identify root cause of problems, choose appropriately among resolution alternatives, collaborate with others and implement solutions as appropriate.
Responsible for inventory of supplies.
Attends departmental meetings/hospital continuing education and participates in department and hospital activities.
Ensures that all outpatient requisitions include all required information (diagnosis, physician signature, etc.).

Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

Required:High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) &
Completion of an approved, accredited formal training program Or
High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) &*Minimum of three (3) year relevant work experience including but not limited to training in a clinical laboratory, medical clinic, hospital, or vocational school, or technical training to qualify for required Licensure/Certification portion detailed below.
Associate's Degree in a Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Chemical, Physical, Biological Science.
· BLS certification (through an approved AHA program &
One (1) of the following credentials &/or combination of experience as follows:
· Certified Phlebotomist (CPT) or Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) through nationally recognized accredited agency (i.e. AMT, ASCP, ASPT, ABOR) & *Minimum of three (3) year relevant work experience including but not limited to training in a clinical laboratory, medical clinic, hospital, or vocational school, or technical training to qualify for higher level of certification as detailed below. Or
· Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through a nationally recognized accredited agency (i.e. AMT, ASCP, ASPT, ABOR) Or
· Certified as Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) through a nationally recognized accredited agency (i.e. AMT, ASCP, ASPT, ABOR) Or
· Certified as Clinical Office Laboratory Technician (COLT) through a nationally recognized accredited agency (i.e. AMT, ASCP, ASPT, ABOR)

Required: None – *Unless experience was substituted for higher level of required education &/or certification as detailed above.
Preferred: Minimum of one (1) year of experience in clinical laboratory work experience (i.e. phlebotomy, waived testing)
