DESCRIPTION

This is an entry level classification.  Under direct supervision, the purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of basic technical and paraprofessional duties as well as general clerical duties in support of the services and activities of the Planning and Development Department's Business License & Customer Service unit. Works with building contractors, architects, engineers, builders, and the general public pertaining to Business License, Land Development and Improvement, permit requests, and related concerns.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Processes various documents, files and scan important memos, letters, etc. Receives, reviews, and routes applications for compliance for business license and Building permits
  • Processes payments,  Accepts and processes basic permit applications, plans, and supporting documents and assists higher level technical and professional staff with building, planning, permit processing; performs limited reviews of permit applications, plans, and supporting documents for completeness and compliance with legal standards and city requirements; routes information to professional staff; monitors permit counter work flow processes; issues completed permits following established guidelines.
  • Calculates, reviews, receives, and processes payment for permit fees and issues receipts; posts payment information to departmental, fiscal, or other records according to standard procedures; handles and balances cash drawer to appropriate accounts and reconciles reports; establishes and maintains payment installment contracts.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of technical and specialized rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and activities in order to direct questions and inquiries related to such technical and specialized rules to the appropriate staff.
  • Answers telephones, fax or email documents. Operates standard office equipment, including job-related computer hardware and software applications, facsimile equipment, and multi-line telephones. Responds promptly to requests for records.
  • Assists in issuing permits for commercial and residential projects.  
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:    High School diploma or GED
Experience:  Six (6) months of experience in customer service preferably in the construction industry.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent filing skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook to coordinate daily work.
  • Must be detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
