ABOUT THE POSITION

JOB SUMMARY:

Digitizes and performs varied data entry and manipulation to create, maintain, display and update a comprehensive geographic information system including accurate base maps, fee title and lease ownership documents.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

Geographic Information Systems Technician I is the entry level in this specialized technical class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn geographic and related mapping techniques and the use of appropriate computer hardware and software. This class is alternatively staffed with Geographic Information Systems Technician II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications for the higher level class.

Geographic Information Systems Technician II is the experienced level in this specialized technical series. Incumbents independently perform data entry, mapping, documentation and related work. This class is distinguished from the Geographic Information Systems Analyst classes in that the latter performs professional level work in the creation and manipulation of databases and provides technical assistance to technicians and support staff.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive and Promotional list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months at either level or may be extended as needed by the Office of Human Resources. The Geographic Information Systems Technician I is a training underfill position, upon successful completion of the probationary period (520 hours worked to 2,080 hours worked) and the training program, which is up to two (2) years, the successful candidate will be non-competitively promoted to Geographic Information Systems Technician II.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Geographic Information Systems Technician I - Equivalent to completion of an Associate's Degree OR technical school with major course work in drafting, pre-engineering, computer science or geographic studies or a closely related field. Full-time experience in digitizing data or working with geographic information system data may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis.

Geographic Information Systems Technician II - In addition to the above: Minimum of one (1) year of full-time technical experience in entering data and producing finished documents using a geographic information system.

Licenses and Certifications: Specified positions may require possession of a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Processes and digitizes data to enter information into the geographic information system. Creates and modifies data files by entering electronically converted data into appropriate database system. Produces cadastral maps, plots, graphic simulation, and manuscript data for use by various District departments and local agencies. Reviews recorded documentation for right-of-way, zoning and other county agencies and determines if valid transfer or division of land has been made; ensures compliance with all appropriate statues and ordinances. Makes manual and/or visual checks of preliminary data and final products to ensure quality control of all data entering the system. Maintains accurate records and documentation of work performed; updates such records as procedures are modified. Makes adjustments and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment required for data entry and output production; reports the need for maintenance or repair. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Attends training meetings and upgrades knowledge of GIS system use; applies and documents new techniques as they are implemented.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
