Nature and Scope

This is an evening shift position working Monday through Friday, 3:15 pm - 10:45 pm. This position reports directly to the Assisted Living Director and is a lead RN in nature. This position respectfully interacts with all residents, family members, visitors and co-workers, and maintains a positive customer service relationship practicing honesty and integrity in all aspects of job performance. In performance of duties, the SALSA is entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinating and assisting in the management of nursing and aide services rendered to residents by direct service staff on scheduled shift.
  • Evaluates the clinical competence of nurses and aides, and reports needs or concerns to the Assisted Living Director.
  • Coordinates accurate and timely completion of LifeConnect profiles and plans. Participates in LifeConnect care plan meetings. Provides direction to the Assisted Living aides in completing assigned care duties and services based on the LifeConnect Plan.
  • Oversees completion of admissions, transfers and discharges. Reviews demographic/census data in Vision.
  • Makes regular rounds to resident rooms to assess clinical and environmental conditions and social/emotional well being of residents. Takes prompt action and responds to resident change in condition.
  • Provides resident and family support as needed. This includes but is not limited to; documents and responds to concerns, makes referrals to appropriate professional or agency as care needs require, and provides client teaching, wellness counseling, and health promotion as needed.
  • Provides direct nursing care as needed. Supervises and/or administers medications under written order with applicable statutory authority.
  • Assists in the coordination of unit staffing. This will include receiving call offs and assisting in finding replacements.
  • Participates in recruitment and selection process for AL staff. Supports orientation and training of staff, monitors daily performance, and provides direct input on performance evaluations.
  • Assists with safety, worker's compensation, and employee health programs.
  • Conducts routine staff meetings for the Assisted Living staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse currently licensed in good standing, in the State of Connecticut.
  • Holds a Bachelors Degree in Nursing with a minimum of 2 years full-time equivalent clinical experience in nursing-at least (1) year of which must be in a home health care agency or community health program that included care of the sick at home. OR Associates Degree in Nursing with 4 years full-time equivalent clinical experience in nursing within the past (10) years-at least (1) year of which must be in a home health care agency or community health program that included care of the sick at home.
  • Geriatric nursing experience preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Understanding of regulations governing assisted living.

The position requires skill in assessing problems, planning and evaluating solutions in relationship to leading of staff and coordinating resident needs. The job requires understanding, patience and diplomacy in dealing with people. The RN SALSA Designee must have strong time management skills and be well organized. The ability to maintain confidentiality and good judgement are necessary. The position demands attention to detail, accuracy and organizational skills. This position requires the ability to work under pressure, ability to work independently and arrange work schedule to meet objectives and deadlines.

Assurance - Updates residents monthly on campus programs as well as addressing specific concerns and reviewing the progress of needs identified in the resident satisfaction survey. Maintains complete confidentiality of resident and staff issues.

Tangibles - Exemplifies campus dress code and has a presentable, professional and well-organized office conducive to meeting comfortably with staff, residents, family and visitors at any time. Ensures resident programs provide an impression of quality and excellence.
Empathy - Knows all residents by name. Listen attentively to resident and staff comments, to understand preferences and needs and to graciously offer resolution when appropriate. Greet new residents within time frame defined by campus policy to establish relationship and explain function of department. Promote a strong sense of welcome to residents through personal, sincere interaction.
Responsiveness - Respond to issues in a timely manner. Utilize voice email and electronic communication to provide information appropriately. Check and process intercampus mail daily and respond to all memos and written requests within time frame specified. If out of the office for more than one business day, an appropriate voice mail message will be recorded and an “Out of Office” reply will be set up through their e-mail account.
