Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Payroll Department is organized as a unit under Business and Finance with direct reporting responsibilities to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Finance. The Payroll Department has the functional responsibilities for all FSU payrolls and is responsible for timely and accurate payments of salary to faculty, staff, temporary and student employees as well as the reconciliation and remittance of deductions and benefits. The Payroll Department meets its purpose through the use of manual and complex automated systems such as Banner Finance, Position Control, Student Accounts and Human Resources Modules.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of the Accounting Technician – Contributing is to verify, process and ensure accuracy and validity of moderately complex transactions related to the bi-weekly payroll. All work study, grant and hourly temporary employees are paid on the bi-weekly cycle. This position must also prepare and submit timely and accurate reports, coordinate payroll processing with Human Resources, Business & Finance and other interdependent areas; and serve employees by providing valid responses to questions and concerns. This position serves as backup to provide answers to general payroll information both in verbal and written format in accordance with Federal, State and local laws and regulations; as well as University system, Institution and Department policies and procedures.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge skills and abilities:

Knowledge of technical accounting, including the maintenance and reporting of financial accounting data. Ability to remain current in developments and trends in the area of assignment.

Ability to observe, monitor, collect and record fiscal data. Ability to assess the accuracy, validity and integrity of data. Ability to prepare documentation and create financial reports.

Ability to identify problems, determine possible solutions, make suggestions for possible improvements and actively work to resolve the issues in the work unit. Ability to interpret oral and/or written guidelines to solve problems.

This position must be able to communicate information to individuals or groups and deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience. Ability to clearly and concisely convey information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and the message. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others.

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in accounting and progressive payroll experience.
Two years of accounting experience
