Radiation Safety Officer – Salt Lake City, Utah

What are we looking for?

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the company's radiation safety program in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role involves ensuring safe use, storage, transportation, and handling of nuclear density gauges and coordinating training, licensing, and inspections to maintain full regulatory compliance. This position may travel at least 10% of the time.

Shift/Schedule: Core business hours, 8am-5pm

What you'll do:

  • Maintain and implement the company's radiation safety program in accordance with NRC/Agreement State requirements

  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies (e.g., NRC, state radiation control agencies)

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable radiation safety regulations, licenses, and permits

  • Develop, conduct, and document radiation safety training and refresher courses for field personnel

  • Oversee personnel dosimetry monitoring program (e.g., badges), including record keeping and exposure assessments

  • Conduct regular audits, leak tests, safety inspections, and inventories of radioactive materials and devices

  • Investigate and report radiation-related incidents, including loss or theft of sources, overexposures, and gauge damage

  • Manage and submit regulatory filings, renewals, amendments, and incident reports

  • Maintain calibration and certification schedules for all nuclear density gauges

  • Coordinate the secure transport and storage of radioactive materials in accordance with DOT and radiation safety regulations

  • Stay updated on changes to applicable regulations and communicate impacts to management and staff

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field AND;

  • 3+ years of experience working with nuclear density gauges or in a related radiation safety role OR;

  • 7+ years of experience working with nuclear density gauges or in a related radiation safety role in lieu of the above degree

  • In-depth knowledge of NRC and/or Agreement State regulations, including 10 CFR Part 20 and Part 30

  • Strong organizational, training, and communication skills.

  • Field and office-based work with regular travel to project sites, storage facilities, and regulatory offices

  • Ability to lift and move nuclear density gauges (typically ~30-40 lbs)

  • Valid driver's license and reliable driving record

  • Ability to travel to job sites as needed

Preferred Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Current or previous designation as an RSO on a radioactive materials license

  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or other relevant certification
