Hours:Variable start times, 5:00am to -5:00pm Job Summary
Performs technical functions necessary in the preparation of tissues for microscopic examination by the pathologist; assists the pathology supervisor with quality assurance documentation and monitoring; ensures the accuracy and validation of immuno-histochemical (IHC) stains and associated quality control; assists with the implementation of new procedures and equipment; participates in the evaluation of new instruments; leads review and training sessions as necessary.
License/Registration/Certification Required: HTL, HT or eligible (ASCP) certification
Minimum Education Required: Associate degree with required course study in histology as defined by the certification requirements.
Bachelor's degree required for Technologist designation.• Accessions, embeds, sections, stains, coverslips, and labels tissue specimens; presents stained slides to pathologists. • Performs immuno-histochemical and other special stains with associated quality control including validations. • Acts as the primary troubleshooter for equipment and test systems; escalates appropriately. • Performs and monitors daily quality control, insuring proper documentation at all times; taking and documenting corrective action as necessary; assures instrument maintenance records are up to date and compliant. • Performs and results proficiency testing as assigned, according to laboratory procedures. • Responsible for maintaining inventory for the workstations and equipment. • Assists department personnel with continuous compliance of histology accreditation standards, including metrics, procedures and competencies. • Assists the Pathology Supervisor with training needs: improving histology skills, orientation of new associates and annual competencies. • Analyzes new procedures using appropriate scientific principles; test correlation, data collection and analysis, determination of performance characteristics. • Committed to the continuous improvement of the patient experience which includes patient safety, quality of care and excellent service.
