  • Accounts for and coordinates day-to-day operations including patient flow, staff assignments, projecting staffing needs, adjusting staffing for volumes.  Is “in charge”.  Delegates and supervises care. Coordinate operations with other area(s) to ensure continuity of care for the patient.
  • Serve as a clinical expert, mentoring associates, maintains positive relationships and builds teamwork.  Acts as a role model, coach and evaluates staff performance. Provides ongoing feedback to staff related to job performance and departmental processes (focuses on real-time performance coaching, administers focus feedbacks if necessary)
  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards, maintains department in survey readiness, policies, procedures, and standards.   Evaluates quality and appropriateness of care.  Conducts audits for regulatory compliance as well as department quality of care. 
  • Coordinate with staff educator to meet educational needs in new policies, procedures and techniques.  Provides “just in time education”. Participate in associate interviewing, orientation, and provides input for performance reviews. 
  • Evaluates/ Function as a preceptor in orienting new associates and assisting with the completion of the orientation checklist.  Assist with Return Demonstrations/Clinical Observations and training.
  • Co-facilitates planning and conducting of shared governance meetings.  Creates and supports and environment where innovation and creativity are encouraged and valued. Participates in clinical care committees.
  • Assist with ensuring that assigned area(s) are supplied with all the equipment and materials necessary to provide the level of nursing care required in the care plans. 
  • Participates in physician rounding and in leads in Multi-disciplinary patient rounding.  Confer with physicians and other personnel concerning patient care or other matters relating to assigned area(s). Provide professional nursing care as required and can fill in as staff nurse when needed.
  • Committed to the continuous improvement of the patient experience which includes patient safety, quality of care and excellent service.  Adhere to the organization's published values.  Understands patient satisfaction scores; and can relay this in practical terms to the staff.
  • Effectively communicates through difficult situations and effectively manages conflict.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

License/Registration/Certification Required:  Current RN license for the State of Michigan, BSN required or completion within 2 yrs

License/Registration/Certification Preferred:  BCLS, ACLS

Advanced Education Required:  (Associate/Bachelor/Master/PhD level and applicable field of study or related field) or equivalent combination of training and/or experience:  Bachelors' degree in Nursing (BSN) within 2 years of entry into job.

Advanced Education Preferred:  (Associate/Bachelor/Master/PhD) 

Minimum Experience Required:  Two (2) or more years of nursing experience.

Additional Experience Preferred: formal or informal leadership experience preferred

Skills (Interpersonal and job complexity):

Must have the ability to use software relevant to the job (Word, Excel, etc.)

Strong leadership, organization and communication skills required.  Demonstrates interpersonal communication skills, ability to resolve conflict, and ability to work as a team leader.

Analytical skills sufficient to plan, implement and assist with the coordination of operations in assigned area(s) and to assist with quality assurance and to resolve equipment problems.

Abilities:   

Must be able to work independently, meet deadline and demonstrate accountability for assignments.

Must have the ability to organize and analyze data.

Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, extended shifts and/or extra shifts, various locations, sometimes on short notice.

Environmental Conditions:  Potential exposure to fumes, dust, gases, and odors.   Frequent changes in temperature may occur.  Possibility of exposure to communicable diseases.
