This is our first year exploring a “balanced calendar”/year-round school to better serve the needs of students and families and to help minimize academic loss over the summer.
The School Nurse will provide nursing services, first aid, illness and emergency care to students and staff in accordance with professional standards, school policies and procedures, and state and local mandates. The school nurse is proactive, in issues that affect the health of children, to promote optimal learning in the educational setting and will oversee the emotional, mental, physical and social health of students. The school nurse will also manage students who have chronic health conditions and includes giving them medication as needed and working with parents and teachers to create and enforce care plans. Implement all procedures to meet compliance standards as guided by the Michigan School Code and the Michigan Public Health Code.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assess and evaluate the health and development status of students through nursing diagnosis.
Plan a course of action and assist students, their parents, and school personnel in assuming proper roles for eliminating, minimizing, preventing, or understanding the health problems which interfere with effective learning by the student.
Recommend to parents and appropriate school personnel modifications in the educational program as indicated by the health and developmental status of students.
Provide a plan for in-service education for school personnel including observations of the health of students, referral systems, and first aid and emergency care procedures.
Participate as the health team specialist on the child education evaluation team to develop the health care component of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students with identified health needs.
Ability to assist students, their families, and school personnel in recognizing potential and current health needs and in the development of plans for utilizing available resources to meet these needs.
Submits records, reports and assignments promptly and efficiently.
Deals with obstacles and constraints positively.
Demonstrates ability to adjust to and use new approaches in the performance of his/her duties.
Seeks and takes advantage of opportunities for professional growth.
Maintain appropriate licenses and training hours as required.

Certification as a registered nurse
Certification as a school nurse OR begins certification process once hired
Experience in school and/or pediatric nursing desired
Must possess physical ability to perform all required work:
Must be able to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climb stairs.
Must be able to lift and/or move and support at least 50 pounds of weight (pick up a child, etc.).
Must be able to use upper body strength (CPR, etc.)
Ability to handle stressful situations and carry out responsibilities during an emergency.
Ability to appropriately communicate and maintain a professional relationship with supervisors, staff, parents, students and with members of the community.
Ability to work independently and effectively as a team member to complete job duties and assignments in a timely manner with limited supervision.
