In collaboration with the Manager and/or Director, the Charge Nurse for the Vascular Access Team (VAT) utilizes discretion and independent judgment to direct shift operations for a highly specialized team of Registered Nurses (RNs) that provide vascular access services to all patients within Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) licensed hospitals and outpatient services on the Loma Linda campus. VAT serves inpatients and outpatients and places difficult peripheral IVs (PIV), peripheral inserted central catheters (PICC) via ultrasound, ultrasound-guided midline and extended dwell catheters for difficult access patients, therapeutic phlebotomy. Educates patients regarding procedure and ensures informed consents are obtained as designated in policy. Provides training for select staff nurses to place peripheral IVs using ultrasound guidance. VAT supports the Internal Medicine Hospitalist Procedure Team with paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, bone marrow, central line placements and other procedures as needed. Ensures staff is competent to deliver nursing care of adult and pediatric populations needing vascular access. Recognizes questionable medical cases or complex issues and consults with medical director and/or service chiefs as needed to ensure quality safe patient care. Promotes the empowerment of the nursing profession and excels in implementing new knowledge, innovations and improvements in practice to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Facilitates a positive environment and provides hands-on guidance to engage staff in adopting a care delivery model of accountability, empowerment, and excellence in practice. Performs other duties as needed.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing required. If hired prior to January 1, 2018, Bachelor's Degree may be in progress, or, an Associate's Degree in Nursing with a Bachelor's Degree in another field and a Master's Degree in Nursing required. If hired prior to January 1, 2018, Master's Degree may be in progress. Minimum three years of nursing experience in pediatric and adult vascular access required. Minimum one year of prior management or supervisory experience preferred.

In-depth knowledge of vascular access principles and practice. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and survey process required. Demonstrates advanced competencies in vascular access, clinical nursing, leadership, supervision, management and communications skills required. Exhibits professional behavior at all times. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills. Able to read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required. Vascular Access Board Certification preferred. Other as outlined in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care. Valid driver's license required at time of hire. Must have and maintain good driving record and automobile insurance required.
