Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Packaging Engineering Group will be working out of the Medifast Product Innovation Center in Owings Mills, MD. The Senior Manager, Packaging Engineering Group position provides project leadership of some medium/high complexity projects, leading workstreams within larger projects and programs. A medium to high level of autonomy of medium/high-level complexity projects, or high level of autonomy for low complexity projects is expected. A successful candidate is expected to have an advanced knowledge of technical competencies with a focus on building technical breadth

 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for proactively driving Front of Funnel innovation development efforts, creating a holistic approach to packaging design that enhances the Coach, Client Experience in the unboxing experience and enables competitive advantage. 
  2. Develop and maintain a Packaging Engineering team for Medifast including setting, create & maintain budget, establish packaging strategy, documentation processes, establishment of testing protocol supporting Innovation, current business, & sustainability initiatives
  3. Work closely with Global Brand Marketing Innovation to create highly differentiated concepts and technology platforms by linking consumer insights to new ideas for both finished package and the Kit.
  4. Manage work with external suppliers, technology partners, universities, and design agencies to enable agile development of Open Innovation and bring new-to-world packaging technologies to life.
  5. Identify and demonstrate proof of principle of innovative packaging and packaging equipment. Gather and translate insights into potential strategic packaging opportunities.
  6. Work closely with Supply Chain on cost reduction and efficiency projects and with Corporate QA on quality improvement initiatives involving packaging.
  7. Leverage external network to support scouting for novel applications and opportunities. Identify strategic packaging technology suppliers, ensure partnerships are developed and supplier innovation activities are aligned with company innovation
  8. Work collaboratively with Legal and Technical Intelligence teams to determine best way to leverage Intellectual Property and ensure proper documentation is in place to protect innovations. Identify patent, competitive and cross-industry activity to assess opportunities and infringement risks.

 

Scope

The role will have 3 direct reports of Packaging Engineers. This role will acts as a strategic business partner to ensure interactions with: Product Development, Quality and Regulatory Compliance, Brand Marketing & Supply Chain. Support cross-functional development teams to integrate packaging innovation into Front of Funnel platforms. Individual will support R&D Innovation projects as aligned with business, creating a holistic approach to packaging development across all sites manufacturing and fulfillment sites, domestic & international. Collaborate with Procurement and external packaging suppliers for cost savings across manufacturing and fulfillment centers.

 

Knowledge, Education, Skills & Abilities

Qualifications:

  • BS in Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related science field with 7-12 years of experience in Packaging Development or MS Packaging or related field with 6-8 years of experience in CPG or Direct to Consumer Packaging Development 
  • Demonstrated consumer-focused mind set and can apply design thinking facilitated by a good knowledge of materials and equipment to solve consumer needs and deliver meaningful experiences.
  • Experience with design and development of innovative packaging solutions is considered a key advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to harness strategic thinking to solve difficult problems with effective solutions
  • Good understanding of the technical aspects of packaging including different materials, converting technologies, equipment, and processes
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced, ambiguous work environment
  • Ability to prioritize against business initiatives 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and team of 3 direct reports simultaneously 
  • Ability to effectively influence, negotiate, and communicate with internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to manage risk & communicate effectively in project team/leadership
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills to constructively challenge the status quo
