General Summary of Position:

\n\n

The Nurse Clinician within the Division of Community Pediatrics Functions in a nursing work leader role, supporting personnel associated with nursing services throughout the division. Monitors quality and safety issues. Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients following established standards and practices. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Qualifications:

    \n\t
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. B.S.N. preferred.
  • \n\t
  • EXPERIENCE: Three to four years of professional nursing experience; At least 1 year of previous outpatient pediatric experience. Must have strong organizational skills. Previous nursing administrative experience is highly desired

  • LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: Registered Nurse, licensed in the District of Columbia; CPR certification.
  • \n\t
  • SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care; Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care; Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, community partners and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Equivalent experience working with, underserved communities, and children and adolescents with complex medical and social needs.

WORKING SCHEDULE:

\n\n\n\n

Will normally work Monday through Friday day shift with occasional outreach events on evening and weekends. Position based in Tenleytown but will routinely require travel to work in community locations including mobile clinic sites and school-based health centers. Must be able to provide own transportation to local sites.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    \n\t
  • Maintains consistent presence at all clinical sites to implement clinical policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective coordinated care throughout the Division of Community Pediatrics. Exercises situational judgement in concert with policies and procedures of the division.
  • \n\t
  • Assist Program Administrator in providing work direction for assigned nursing personnel in accordance with clinic, governmental and other regulatory standards across Community Pediatrics clinical sites. Serves as the point of contact for nursing personnel changing shifts or calling in regarding attendance matters.
  • \n\t
  • In conjunction with Program Administrator participates in designated personnel management functions to include interviewing, orienting new nursing staff and coaching/mentoring and counseling existing staff.
  • \n\t
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures; attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested. In conjunction with the Division leadership develops and supports continuing education opportunities for nursing staff. Maintains own clinical expertise by attending in service programs.
  • \n\t
  • Oversees quality control functions, performance of regular equipment checks (such as code carts, refrigerator logs and the monitoring of oxygen tanks) and drug and quality assurance checks to ensure clinics are within acceptable standards.
  • \n\t
  • Oversees clinic inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies. Orders pharmacy items to include vaccines, antibiotics, and antipyretics. Order supplies to include special orders. Performs monthly reconciliation of pharmacy account to assure accuracy and maintain fiscal objectives. Advises Program Administrator of any fiscal variances from budget.

  • Coordinator for KMMC Vaccine for Children Immunization Program. Secondary Coordinator for School Based Health Center Program. Responsible for emergency retrieval and safe guarding of vaccines as needed.
  • \n\t
  • Participates with Division Leadership in quality improvement objectives and assists in maintaining fiscal objectives of the Department of Pediatrics by recognizing cost reduction opportunities.
  • \n\t
  • Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications, vaccines, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards. Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed. Documentation is complete, accurate, and legible. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in the collection of samples and tests. Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.

  • Performs patient telephone triage, assesses needs, and coordinates needs with medical staff.
  • \n\t
  • Educates patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • \n\t
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results.
  • \n\t
  • Develops relationship with community partners. Participates in community events.
  • \n\t
  • Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations standards in all activities.
