Job Summary and Mission

The principal infrastructure engineer leads infrastructure design and planning, as well as directs and helps to develop the overall strategic roadmap for infrastructure services. The engineer in this position is expected to combine deep and diverse infrastructure services experience with a comprehensive understanding of current trends to chart the course of infrastructure architecture for Starbucks. This role may independently manage projects and provide supervision of peer projects to both build out and enhance infrastructure services. The scope of influence for this role spans all aspects of enterprise infrastructure services, to include network, compute, automation, and programmatic interaction, and encompasses both on-premises as well as cloud architecture. A deep level of expertise in large-scale network engineering is strongly desired for this role. Some travel may be required for this role, not to exceed 10%.

  • Research, Design, and Engineering
    • Leads long-term architecture planning for services across the infrastructure portfolio
    • Directs short- and long-term infrastructure planning to meet business requirements
    • Directs efforts to establish and review infrastructure architecture, standards, and best practices for design and implementation
    • Analyzes capacity issues and develops long-range capacity planning models
    • Ensures infrastructure architecture is fully compliant with security guidelines
    • Anticipates gaps and issues with existing infrastructure services to proactively architect and design solutions before they impact business systems
    • Coordinates and develops infrastructure reference architectures
    • Researches and develops the engineering for new infrastructure services
    • Leads the development and maintenance of the infrastructure architectural roadmap
  • Professional Development
    • Attends professional conferences and seminars
    • Prepares white papers, and presents technical briefings
    • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations

  • Monitoring and Analysis
    • Identifies and defines needs of infrastructure management tools, and designs and implements systems accordingly
    • Analyzes infrastructure activity and problems to discover and prevent systemic errors
    • Assists with the development of infrastructure metrics and KPIs, and the reporting capabilities required to track them
  • Incident Escalation and Troubleshooting
    • Assesses data to lead analysis and root cause investigation of outages as needed
    • Provides Tier IV escalation support of infrastructure service incidents to diagnose problems and resolve time-critical issues
  • Documentation
    • Documents architectures, processes, as-builts, projects, standards, and root cause analyses both in text and diagram form
    • Leads the formulation and implementation of installation standards and procedures
  • Vendor Management
    • Evaluates services provided by vendors and recommends changes
  • Projects
    • Independently manages projects and provides supervision of peer projects as needed
  • Subject Matter Expertise
    • Demonstrates deep knowledge of four or more infrastructure subject matter areas
  • Programming
    • Demonstrates and maintains fluency in at least one programming language
    • Develops and writes software used for infrastructure automation, operations, and service management
    • Directs software development projects as needed, with specific focus on an API-first approach

Job Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience
  • 8-10 years operating data center infrastructure at enterprise scale
  • 3-5 years of progressive technical leadership roles in enterprise-scale data center infrastructure operations and management
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with audiences ranging from junior members of the team up to senior technology executives, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrates a passion for technology and continuous learning, and has a bias for action
  • Vendor relationship management skills
  • Understanding of CapEx and OpEx financial management principles and budget maintenance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education (ideal education level or degree): Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience
  • Deep technical expertise in two or more of the following technology areas
    • Data center networking fabrics – core/agg/access or leaf/spine architectures
    • Wide-area networking and large-scale routing protocols (OSPF/BGP)
    • Server technologies and server virtualization
    • Data storage, SAN fabrics, and backup/recovery
    • Infrastructure automation and configuration management at scale
    • Public cloud engineering and deploy,ent management (Azure, AWS, GCE, etc.)
  • Demonstrated success in driving DevOps or SRE practices in an infrastructure team
  • Implementation and/or practice of using agile methodologies such as scrum or Kanban
  • Experience with engagement or interoperation with globally-distributed teams, and/or one or more remote direct reports
