SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, integrative thinker to play an important role in our Medicinal Chemistry programs focusing on small molecule drug discovery.  A demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, start-up matrix environment will be essential as well as strong organization skills in an outsourced setting.  A strong track record in drug discovery and synthetic chemistry is essential.  The role requires an individual with a proven track record of delivering quality development candidates and knowledge of the interdisciplinary drug discovery process from lead generation to development candidate nomination.  Additionally, the candidate will have demonstrated excellent organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate scientific leadership in an outsourced Medicinal Chemistry environment; implement and execute medicinal chemistry strategies at various CROs

  • Provide oversight in synthetic chemistry including compound design and troubleshooting for synthetic challenges 

  • Carry out in-depth analysis of complex and multi-faceted biological data (activity, selectivity, DMPK physicochemical properties etc.)

  • Provide timely and well-organized reports to project teams and management team forums

  • The ability to work and influence drug discovery cross-functional teams

  • Collaborate effectively with other departmental managers and functions.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations

Basic Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent in synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry

  • 5+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with a strong track record of scientific innovation, and delivery of clinical candidates

  • Experience in solving complexed synthetic chemistry and medicinal chemistry problems

  • Knowledge of the drug R&D processes and understanding of ADME/PK, pharmacology, CMC, formulations and computational chemistry

  • Great team player with demonstrated ability to work in dynamic and entrepreneurial environment

  • Scientific leader with effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Demonstrated technical proficiency, scientific creativity, independent thought, and ability to effectively collaborate with others

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required

  • Ability to foster positive working relationships across the organization; in particular with functional and program leads

  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.
