We build cloud and on-prem services, as well tools to ensure systems are built to System Quality Requirements and ever-growing demand for scale, compliance, and governance. Your Role This Director of Quality Engineering position reports into the vice-president of engineering for Digital Platforms. You will directly manage 3 teams with a total of 25 partners (Starbucks employees) besides external teams. You will hire well and grow the strength of team with timely coaching and direction. You will also work cross-functionally with other key Starbucks Teams. You will operate with efficiency and efficacy in mind to shape a holistic vision for higher quality at lower costs. You will be pragmatic about what to build and what buy or borrow including adopting from open source community. You will champion for actionable results in reasonable timeframe bringing along other teams as needed. You will bring a positive and personable approach to the team applying growth mindset to learn and adapt as our projects change. You will have prior experience with modern quality efforts including chaos testing, experimentation, isolation, Machine learning driven testing, TDD, etc., and apply these with ease to engage the teams. You will have demonstrated experience of using data from production systems to improve system health and customer experience, besides optimizing operational costs. All the while the candidate will model and act in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Strategy, Planning, and Execution – Accountable for defining high-level, shared vision/approach. Develops quality engineering strategic vision for systems and teams with short and long term deliverables.
  • Roadmap – Accountable for developing quality engineering roadmap and strategy. Be the technical leader to know in depth to align for deliverables based on capabilities and demands.
  • Measure and Optimize – Define, Use, and optimize Quality KPIs. Understand and use Live Site Procedures for 24 x 7 service quality. Use data to understand and optimize quality and costs. Look for continuous improvements to simplify our workflows and systems.
  • Vendor Relationships –Builds strong vendor relationships to influence product roadmaps, establish SLAs and manages SOWs/contracts where needed. Negotiates with vendors, ensures product and contract compliance, and manages ongoing relationships.
  • Tools – Owns robust and reliable tools for quality efforts. Create usable experiences to ensure smooth operations for engineering teams to quickly adopt and use the tools.
  • Program & Project Delivery – In partnership with the PMO and peer Engineering Directors, establish and aligns on business case, project budget, resource requirements, and scope. Ensures that projects meet expectations for quality, timeliness, and cost effectiveness.
  • Financial Acumen/Budget – Develops and manages annual capital and expense budgets for your areas. Monitor work progress and monthly financial reports to manage for results and costs.
Partner Development & Team Building – Our partners (Starbucks Employees) are key to our success: engage continuously to attract and develop talent with business acumen, technical expertise, and thought leadership. Responsible for recruitment and selection through talent career management.
  • Talent Planning – Identifies current and future state skills needed and determines best way to fill gaps through partner development and/or acquisition. Accountable for understanding, estimating, and staffing for their area.
  • Hiring – Actively engage in hiring talent to his/her team and help with staffing on others' teams. Plans for and makes effective staff decisions leveraging staff augmentation options to ensure no gaps in service/staffing occur.
  • Build high performing teams - Builds effective teams by providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities. Conducts and ensures ongoing 2-way performance discussions. Oversees training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed. Ability to manage teams comprised of technical and data professionals at a variety of levels. Challenges and inspires team members to achieve results.
  • Performance Management – Accountable for the performance of their direct and indirect reports including productivity, quality of work, collaboration and attitude/behavior of team.

Job Qualifications

Summary of Experience Progressive experience in large scale systems, on-prem, and cloud services design, testing and implementation within a large, global organization, 10+ years.
  • Experience with leading multiple engineering teams preferably with consumer, 5+ years.
  • Deep expertise in Quality Engineering with technical depth designing and delivering tools and systems. 5+ years.
  • Team and project management experience, including the ability to build and lead cross-functional teams, 8+
  • Vendor management from RFP-to-run state and active management, 5+
  • Experience with leading full stack teams and driving platform leadership, 5+
  • Experience with modern full-stack technologies: REST, NoSQL, Web, Mobile, data driven Quality
  • Experience with building, deploying, and managing apps and systems for consumer use
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • QSR / Retail focused experience is a plus.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience with agile and systems development lifecycle and technology operations.
  • Hands on experience with quality engineering technologies including: IDEs, Debuggers, Diagnostics Tools, Software Test Automation Tools, etc.
  • Deep technical understanding of distributed systems and interconnected systems.
  • Ability to leverage business knowledge, sound judgment, and resourcefulness to determine appropriate course of action in challenging, ambiguous situations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to engage with and present ideas to senior leadership. Provides key input to facilitate decision-making process.
