The Director of Packaging Engineering is part of our Pharma Services business (PSG), which develops and delivers medicines to market that enable our customers to help more than one million patients each day. Lead all aspects of and run global packaging engineering strategy for pharmaceutical products from development/engineering, to commercialization. The successful candidate would lead a team of Packaging Engineers and Specialists to successful outcomes and is directly responsible for driving continuous improvement within the packaging development function in coordination with multi-functional team. Lead operations and team related to the development and commercialization of multiple packaging formats for customer products. This position works with the Vice President, Global Technical Operations, PSG.

This position may be remotely based and will be a road warrior position requiring up to 75% travel, including international.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for design and creation of packaging network strategy in design and standardization of global template for packaging unit operations in clinical and commercial packaging technology. Works closely with senior packaging business lead to build differentiating customer service offering novel to PSG.

  • Serves as leader to central technical packaging team and community to lead design, and development of packaging components and process/equipment to support early phase through commercial production of drug products for our customers.

  • Acts a lead PSG voice on packaging technology and packaging optimization projects.

  • Direct packaging standardization, optimization and standard methodology implementation for equipment, process, product components and labeling including finished packaging activities for new and existing products.

  • Lead multi-functional team synchronization with site project leads across Development, Operations, QA, Engineering, and Procurement at site and above site corporate levels.

  • Act as company lead and point of contact for internal and external requested activities leading development, technology transfer and validation, commercial support and process troubleshooting and optimization for packaging operations and related quality/regulatory requirements including validation and serialization

  • Build training forums and platforms to support site and network knowledge and information transfer to build outstanding packaging network

  • Supervise and report project and group achievements, report out and collaborate as the need arises with senior management


  • BS degree or higher in Material Science, Mechanical, Chemical or Packaging Engineering.

  • 5+ plus years of demonstrated ability in pharmaceutical process and packaging functions with experience in technical development/engineering, technology transfer, validation, management and process/cost improvements.

  • Leadership experience including developing a team.

  • Consistent record of mentoring and developing staff as well as the technical ability to coordinate departmental business strategy and activities.

  • Full knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) requirements and pharmaceutical processing/packaging regulations.

  • Strong leadership, team building and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent digital literacy, including the ability to develop spreadsheets, presentations and report.
