Position Objective

The Staff Scientist is responsible for providing scientific leadership to aspects of understanding cell culture media, reagents and buffers and their components. Applying knowledge (theoretical and practical) of Biochemistry/Organic Chemistry/Cell Biology/ Biotechnology or Biomedical engineering, to assess cell culture media, supplements, and reagents. Support and engage in the transfer of technology and sharing ideas with the associated manufacturing sites and networks. Identify, investigate, and develop solutions to customer issues (internal and external) in media design, production and quality using data, statistical analysis and experimental design.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and optimize cell culture media and processes suitable for manufacture and meeting customer requirements
  • Investigate, validate, and contribute to new scientific methodologies used to control raw materials, production intermediates, and final products
  • Work on technical/scientific project activities to execute strategies and technical solutions that meet client needs and expectations.
  • Evaluate and contribute to the design of manufacturing processes and supports problem solving as necessary within defined procedures and practices.
  • Work with a cross functional team and provide scientific analytical development, cell culture, process validation, formulations, and/or manufacturing technical support. Makes decisions that involve direct application of technical knowledge.
  • Lead and participate in program identified investigations and the implementation of scalable solutions.
  • Present interpreted results to management, cross-functional teams and external clients.
  • Reviews analytical test results and works with internal team to analyze results.
  • Liaise with internal scientific, analytical, and laboratory functional areas to meet project and team objectives and manage projects/timelines at the experiment level.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, and prioritize multiple and changing priorities
  • Able to work independently.
  • Comply with all company safety, quality, and training procedures and regulations.
  • Report all non-compliance and support, engage in, and potentially lead teams assigned to making improvements.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.

Nature and Scope

The candidate must possess and demonstrate a high attention to detail and planning/scheduling even during parallel work/multitasking assignments. Candidate must be self-directed and driven during both new and complex/challenging workflows and priorities, as well as during routine assignments. Ability to appreciate the significance and contributions of each project toward Company and customer objectives is key.

Measures of Contribution/Impact

The Staff Scientist supports the Media Network within the BioProduction and BioSciences Business divisions within the Life Sciences Solutions Group (LSG). This position supports custom business revenue through understanding customer requirements/applications. This position is engaged in sustaining and growing our business through innovation, technical expertise and improving the knowledge base for product characterization. The ability to achieve these objectives with a forward thinking approach and collaboration both internally and externally to support the program.

Technical Excellence

Possesses the theoretical/practical fundamental concepts and procedures of designing cell culture media and chemical formulations; continues profession development of technical expertise through experience, training, and application.

Education Requirement

  • Requires a Master's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology/Biomedical engineering, or other related discipline with the equivalent knowledge and experience, PhD preferred.

Required Experience

  • Requires a minimum of 8-10 years of experience in a bio/pharma industry including mammalian cell culture (technical expertise in media development and cell culture process development disciplines)
  • Must have excellent time management, highest degree of quality and attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated significant accomplishments leading cross-functional technology
  • Scale-up manufacturing, technology transfer and record of successful accomplishment on cross-functional teams
  • Participation on successful product development teams
  • Understanding of new scientific concepts with an aptitude for statistical analysis and experimental design
