Summary of Job Duties: The Principal Staff Scientist supports the research of a faculty-rank investigator or may serve as a director of or team member within a multi-user core facility. This position, under general direction and with considerable latitude for exercise of independent judgment, provides direct research and research training support at the professional level by directing and executing small, complex research projects or major aspects of larger research projects. He/She may provide extensive guidance to and/or directly supervise technicians, laboratory aides, graduate students, undergraduate students, postdoctoral appointees, and professional staff.
Qualifications:
Doctoral degree and 10 years of relevant experience, including significant project management experience, personnel supervision, and editorial and scientific contributions to grants.
Postdoctoral fellowship experience preferred.

Responsibilities:
Works independently as part of a complex research project/program.
Analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of work and in relation to the general research program.
Prepares written reports on all phases of laboratory work involved in research projects.
Contributes to the design, interpretation, and final writing of research publications.
Writes detailed protocols for the conduct of research.
Keeps abreast of trends in the field of interest by reading current research literature, abstracting scientific articles of value in the prosecution of research problems, and attending and presenting at scientific meetings, seminars, and research conferences.
Develops and implements operating procedures for the laboratory and independently operates complex equipment and instrumentation.
Develops and modifies test methods, evaluates the performance of research equipment and instrumentation, and makes design changes or develops new approaches.
Selects procedures for data collection and handling.
Develops or utilizes computer programs for conversions and statistical treatment of data.
Directs the gathering of research materials, supplies, equipment, and apparatus.
Coordinates service support, including the repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies, and research materials.
Participates in the training, supervision, and evaluation of research support staff, fellows, and students, as needed.
Directs initial training as well as continuous skill development of staff/trainees in laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures, as needed.
Counsels staff/trainees on technical problems and advises and assists staff/trainees with special research projects.
Develops and controls research project budgets in consultation with supervising faculty.
Recommends expenditures for major laboratory equipment and construction.
Authorizes expenditure for expendable supplies and maintenance
Provides a degree of project leadership that is appropriate to the rank and demonstrates an exemplary level of leadership and independence.
Provides overall program/project leadership and management.
Conducts and publishes research with minimal guidance required from the supervising faculty investigator.
Conducts research across multiple programs or projects as relevant.
Participates in long-range research planning.
Manages multiple levels of research staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
