Departmental Overview

The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. CDSS connects the Data Science Education Program, School of Information, Departments of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Center for Computational Biology, and the Data Commons. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.

This incumbent manages data science undergraduate programs and staff as well as the growth of data science undergraduate and graduate programs associated with Computing Data Science and Society (CDSS). Reports to the Executive Assistant Dean (EAD) with a dotted line report to the Associate Deans for Undergraduate Studies and Graduate Studies.

The Director of Academic Programs works in close collaboration with the Associate Deans, EAD, CDSS department managers, and others to support the Data Science undergraduate major as well as supporting development of graduate programs for the division. Manages the team of staff working closely and collaboratively to support Data Science Undergraduate Studies and the Division. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and be willing to share information and work jointly on projects of critical importance to the academic achievements and fundraising efforts of the CDSS. This position provides leadership that demonstrates and communicates a big picture understanding of the organization, its interrelationships, and priorities; and ensures time, resources, learning opportunities, and actions are focused on priorities that matter to the changing workplace. Responsible for modifying processes to enhance services.

This individual oversees the development of new projects and programs to expand the scope and influence of Data Science education across campus and in partnership with external organizations including other UCs, peer institutions, Community Colleges, etc. within California, nationally, and internationally. We are seeking a manager who can balance the challenge of standing up new graduate programs, while maintaining / enhancing our existing undergraduate studies programs.

Data Science Undergraduate Studies expects to grow and take on new undergraduate programs. In addition, the division is working actively to develop new and expand existing graduate programs in Data Science. In coordination with the Associate Deans for Undergraduate and Graduate Education and the DSUS staff, the incumbent will be responsible for carrying out intensive research, analysis, and development of new projects. The incumbent will recommend solutions to problems that arise and will encourage innovative solutions to revenue generation. Possibilities include: starting multiple new revenue generating Master's programs and coordinating with the Statistics and L&S Computer Science majors and minors.  


Responsibilities

30%  Management and Supervision: Manages the existing Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS) staff supporting the Data Science student experience and supports the growth and development of graduate programs that are under development. Oversees all aspects of DSUS including Instructional Support, Student Services, Student Experience, and Adoption/Outreach to other institutions. Working in coordination with the Associate Deans, develops goals and objectives for the team, provides leadership and training to the staff, plans and implements systems, procedures and services, and deals with a variety of complex and unusual problems. Troubleshoots problems and conflicts; provides additional staff training as required. Oversees and performs all management functions, including recruitment, training and coaching, employee development, and performance management. This position has significant managerial duties and manages, through subordinate supervisors and technical leads, the coordination and implementation of activities of the department with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees.

25%  Instructional Support: Working with the Faculty Director of Pedagogy (FDP), provides basic support for curriculum and instructors, oversees issues associated with the major and minor, and coordinates outreach to other campus academic programs. In coordination with the Associate Deans and FDP implements and maintains course and curriculum quality review processes focused on student outcomes and aligned with Data Sciences goals. Collaborates with partner departments and campuses to assess program's effectiveness and recommend changes to program's structure, policies and procedures accordingly. (For example, Data 8 curriculum has been deployed at UCSB and UCSD). Oversees the management of instructional space for the Data Science curriculum. Similar to the support provided to large courses in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, and EECS, ensures appropriate staff support is provided for large lecture courses including providing coordinators to assist faculty in running their courses. Works with academic leaders, including the FDP, to provide support for online instructional design. For example, the incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the faculty have the required assistance for course development and design. Works to assure other academic programs across campus are leveraging the popularity of data science and the importance of it to all of the departments. Duties include developing technical writing courses/programs, in coordination with social sciences and humanities, running a grant program to help faculty incorporate data science modules into their courses, and coordinating curriculum across departments. Responsible for managing the staff who support expanding Data Science-related curriculum across campus. Works with a team to provide analytical and program support for new educational initiatives designed to provide all undergraduates with data science experiences. Uses analytical and problem-solving skills to conduct research on current student experiences in data science and to assess student interest in new curriculum and programs. Will be responsible for proposing and developing new programs and supporting existing programs, such as research experiences and internship programs. Serves on committees representing Data Science education, participating in short term and long-term planning. Develops vision for and works with campus stakeholders to improve student experience across campus and to expand opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

15%  Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB): Works in collaboration with the FDP to provide an inclusive environment for all students and staff and to support the success of all students in our program(s). This position oversees the team directly running existing programs, e.g., Data Scholars, BUDS, and supports the development of additional opportunities to increase the diversity of students in our programs. Develops strategies in collaboration with the ADs and EAD for the promotion of equity and inclusion in the programs as well as across the Division and campus.

15%  Outreach & Adoption: Manages the staff responsible for researching and developing opportunities for enabling improved community college coordination, including articulation of Data 8 with community colleges, which is key for transfer student readiness. This effort will be coupled with providing online delivery of Data 8 including providing assistance to community colleges in setting up the course, etc. Works collaboratively to support efforts aimed at introducing and preparing students, beginning in high school, for data science study and careers.

15%  Budget and financial management: Develops and executes short and long-range strategic planning process for academic programming for DSUS (in conjunction with the Associate Dean), and executes on the subsequent long-term strategies. Working with the Associate Dean and divisional finance lead, prepares the TAS budget for the Data Science minor and major. Manages the resources associated with the various student programs including oversight of various funds and making recommendations for the appropriate use of gift and grant funds. Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams. Collaborates with External Relations and Data Sciences staff to develop sustainable approaches for engaging DSUS faculty, students, and alumni in fundraising. Leads or collaborates in developing grant proposals or pitches to funding agencies and donors. Participates in the program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of the program. Oversees decisions to hire staff and students to carry out program goals within budget, assesses adherence to plans, adapts as appropriate. Develops program budget proposals.


Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution for handling administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. Experience managing an ongoing program while developing new initiatives highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Expert ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Expert interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Expert ability to work collaboratively with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
  • Expert negotiation skills. Ability to manage complex relationships within the organization and in collaboration with affiliated departments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing professional staff and providing leadership for diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate in a matrixed organization.
  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) preferred.
  • Academic background and recognized expertise in selected area of research.
  • Expert fundraising experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and building collaborations between campus, industrial and / or governmental agencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of common analytical tools used within the UC financial community including Excel, CalAnswers, Student Information System, etc. highly desirable.
  • Change management skills a plus.
