The Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence (CE3) is a cluster of over 10 equity student support programs in the Division of Equity and Inclusion. CE3 provides complex and multi-format programs and services to historically marginalized student populations to ensure their successful transition into the university, academic retention/success, degree completion, and pursuit of graduate study and professional careers. These services have a critical impact on the campus' ability to fulfill its mission of equity, access, and inclusion to California's diverse student population.
CE3 services and expertise include solution-focused academic counseling and intervention, assessment of academic needs and addressing academic and non-academic complexities/barriers to academic success; developing individual study plans; creating and fostering academic, social, and professional support networks and communities; credit bearing transition and success courses; academic strategy and enrichment workshops; enhancing academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs, academic/work life balance); academic and summer internships; service learning internships; student group development; academic achievement awards; scholarships and student scholar programs; student grant and emergency loan programs; outreach, recruitment, and campus yield activities; and community-building events.
This position works with students entering as freshmen and is embedded in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), a unit in CE3. It is one of two HSI Student Success Counselors, the other is housed in the Transfer Student Center. This position is expected to work remotely at minimum through July 2021.
- Provides multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges / schools to "at risk" populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, underrepresented populations, HSI, etc.). Conducts comprehensive analyses of students' issues and needs and provides solutions and alternatives to problem areas. Helps students develop strategies to solve academic and personal challenges.
- Coordinates and facilitates holistic support programming and group/cohort based enrichment activities for HSI identifying students and provides complementary support to overall HSI implementation. Helps coordinate HSI specific admission yield activities to facilitate an increase in Chicx/Latx admits who choose to attend Berkeley. Contributes to the suite of services provided by the Latinx Resource Center. Facilitates HSI specific scholarship and supplemental aid opportunities for students.
- Works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues.
- Keeps abreast of student trends in higher education, particularly for HSI identifying, low-income and first-generation college populations.
- Other duties as assigned. May participate in professional development workshops and trainings for their individual growth and learning.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
- Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
- Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
- Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
- Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs.
- Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
- Familiarity with Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) programming and objectives.
- Experience with admissions yield activities.
