Involves designing instructional content for online and hybrid implementation, creating interactive media content, and building content modules in various learning systems and platforms using a variety of software applications in support of academic and professional programs.

UC Scout's Instructional Design department is responsible for the development and support of high school online courses, as well as their respective learning management systems and users. The Instructional Designer will work collaboratively with one fellow instructional designer, a video production team, on and off-site academic and technology staff, and subject matter experts, to design, deliver and maintain high-quality online courses at a rapid pace. The incumbent is a strong communicator, highly organized, and has strong writing and editing skills. Instructional Designers report to the Executive Director.

UC Scout is a division of the University of California, Santa Cruz in Silicon Valley. We are located at 3175 Bowers Avenue in Santa Clara, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Our team serves high school students, providing on­-the-­ground and on­line academic programs for college preparation.

The production unit produces instructional video and film for professional education and college preparation courses. We have a team that includes a producer-director, art director, video editors, graphics artists, subject matter experts, and instructional designer. We develop high-quality video for online courses using the latest video technologies matched with high-quality images.


Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Working knowledge of functional area and understands how work within one course may impact work being done on other courses or in other areas.

Demonstrated analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.

Strong verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, collaboration and negotiation skills.

Strong writing and editing skills.

Preferred Qualifications / Competencies

Working knowledge of organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.

Working knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.

Working knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.

Working knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems.

Working knowledge of adult learning theories and education methodologies.

Working knowledge of e-learning strategies including but not limited to courses (e.g., processes and technologies, etc.).

Special Conditions of Employment

Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
