Social Media Specialist: involves developing digital communications, support and coordination in promoting and protecting UC San Diego Health's brand by telling the story of the organization through marketing, digital and social media, media relations, and other mechanisms to reach intended audiences. Includes producing communications or instruction using the web, audio, video, and other digital media, which may involve content creation, designing, and production.

In coordination with social media strategist, uses skills as a seasoned, experienced digital communications professional to produce, develop, implement, monitor and measure digital content for UC San Diego Health. This position works within Marketing and Communications Department, and works closely with other departments' staff and faculty to promote and leverage information and news via digital media. In addition, monitors and measures efficacy of content and continuously evolves content and strategy to engage with audiences. Demonstrates a full understanding of industry practices and organization policies and procedures. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.


  • Bachelor's Degree in business, healthcare administration or related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Three (3+) or more years of relevant experience producing digital content for branded social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).

  • Strong knowledge of and experience with social media platforms/tools and an understanding of audience demographics and how they use these tools (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, blogs).

  • Experience and proven success in fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.

  • Proven skills in professionalism and diplomacy. Professional demeanor, poise and flexibility to work with diverse colleagues, clients, stakeholders and communities who have widely divergent viewpoints and competing priorities.

  • Excellent listening and questioning skills to assure understanding and foster team work and excellent customer relations. Ability to effectively communicate complex and technical issues an in an understandable manner through all communications mediums to diverse audiences.

  • Exceptional ability to represent the department and the institution in a highly professional and appropriate manner at all times. Interpersonal skills to foster positive working relationships in a high-stress, deadline-driven environment and communicate effectively with supervisor, other team members and internal clients.

  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging clients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in writing, editing and storytelling skills to develop engaging stories, messages and visuals for digital consumption which adhere to an organization's brand standards and communication style guidelines.

  • Experience and skills to produce and edit high quality, engaging, and visually interesting photos for a variety of communications.

  • Knowledge of and experience with social media monitoring and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, native reporting within social platforms, etc. Experience with Sprout Social or Hootsuite preferred.

  • Experience analyzing and reporting performance in various social media channels and tools; make necessary adjustments and optimize content to meet goals and objectives.

  • Project management skills and experience to meet deadlines, follow-through on assignments, take direction, attend to and communicate about the details of any assignment, and juggle multiple competing priorities. Demonstrate personal initiative and strong multitasking skills.

  • Experience using creative software (Examples: Adobe Creative Cloud, Photoshop, Spark, Lightroom, Canva, etc.).

  • Knowledge of emerging new media trends and user demographics and use the information to develop content tactics and strategies.

  • Experience managing paid marketing campaigns in social media.

  • Experience managing a content calendar.

  • Experience writing, producing and editing engaging digital content while ensuring strategically appropriate messaging, accuracy, grammatical correctness, spelling, punctuation, and AP-style.

  • Knowledge of and experience with social media monitoring and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, Sprout Social, Hootsuite, and native reporting within social platforms.

Special Conditions

  • Must be able to work occasional flex schedule (evenings/weekends) to meet operational needs.
