Position Overview:

The Instructional Technologist I position is a team member that focuses on graphics and experiential design. They will support the development of eLearning instructional materials, applications, and experiences.

A successful candidate will be able to design and provide input for;

  • Graphic user interfaces (GUI) for applications

  • Engaging Interactives

  • Create stunning visuals

  • Present data in an aesthetically and practical way.

Other designs for various mediums may be required, such as video games (2D and 3D), videos, motion graphics, and other creative projects that require visuals in support of eLearning.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:
  • Develop instructional materials and products based around the client specifications to meet project requirements.

  • Design eLearning products, including web-based aids, print outs, and infographics

  • Design instructional aids for stand-alone or instructor-led classroom or online use.

  • Provide support to faculty and students in the use of instructional technology.

  • Provide advice on technology or media use and recommendations on the appropriateness of technology or media-based training.

  • Visual Design Specialization: design information visualization projects.

  • Create or select graphics for faculty courses and departmental products such as websites, print materials, banners, and signs and videos.

  • Produce print materials such as mailers, programs and reports.

  • Designs departmental and supporting media such as web, video, interactive and print materials. Design user-driven templates, databases and interfaces for ease of use.

  • Design innovative visual solutions for overcoming barriers in online education.

  • Stay current with computer technology and industry trends for website and graphic design.

  • Adhere to university graphic standards and 508 standards.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Media Arts, Digital Media, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Minimum of two years of experience in graphic design, digital media, instructional technology, educational technology.


  • Effective and appropriate communication skills with diverse audiences; including faculty, students, technologists, and other support personnel.

  • Ability to perform well in a team-based collaborative environment.

  • The ability to explain technical concepts in non-technical terms.

  • Attention to detail and solid follow-up skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a diverse scope of projects requiring detailed analysis, creative/practical problem solving, and sound judgment.

  • Must demonstrate solid organization/communication skills.

  • Perform multiple projects within a short development cycle with moderate supervision.

  • Must respond proactively to training, technical support, and customer service needs.

  • Skilled in applications such as Microsoft Office, and the Adobe Creative Suite.

  • The use of computer equipment and techniques involved in graphic design, interactive design, and digital publishing.

  • Proficient knowledge of user interface design processes and methodology, including User-Centered Design, Interaction Design, and Visual Communication Design.

  • Proficient in the user interface, visual design, and user experience for web interaction.

  • Experience with Experiential Design, User Interfaces (UI), User Experience (UX), and Game Design,

  • Ability to create and maintain visual design and user interfaces through a user-centered design approach. The principles of graphic and interactive design in composing and producing a variety of promotional materials.

  • Integrate and coordinate artwork, printing, and/or photography to create an appealing design and maintain consistency in applications, web-based, and printed materials.

Physical Demands:

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.
