The Preliminary Engineering Section is seeking a Project Manager Small Contracts to support preliminary engineering management by providing general project management of construction, maintenance and other roadway projects. Position will compute cost estimates, provide information to assist in the preparation of the Six Year Plan, and communicate with project team members, technical staff, citizens and public officials. Prepare necessary documents for road construction to improve the primary and secondary system in a cost effective manner, utilize sound technical practices relative to preliminary engineering, contract preparation, roadway design and to provide extraordinary customer service while supporting others to provide safe facilities for the traveling public. Perform field reviews; serve as project lead for assigned projects and compile data and create drawings for contract assemblies.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is considered essential, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions.
Knowledge of roadway design criteria, basic storm water management regulations, construction methods, VDOT standards/specifications and construction materials. Demonstrated knowledge of Civil Engineering principles as they relate to roadway design; and of construction and maintenance contract policies/procedures. Demonstrated skill in reading and interpreting plans as well as estimating and calculating quantities for project estimates/contracts; and in effective communication, both orally and in writing, with diverse groups. Ability to develop, monitor and maintain project scope, schedules and budgets. Ability to utilize computer programs (i.e. iPM, PCES, Transport, Microstation, MS Project, and MS Office/Outlook) for contract preparation project documentation, communications and databases. Must have the physical ability and stamina to conduct physical inspection of projects in the field under varying types of weather/terrain. EIT preferred. Valid driver's license.
Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Technology preferred and/or any combination of engineering technical experience or college level study in civil engineering, mathematics and/or computer technologies.
