About the Role

Alcoa has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Approvals Specialist to join the team. This is a permanent full time opportunity based at the Alcoa Head Office and will be offered on a family friendly, Monday to Friday roster with a paid leisure day off every 4 weeks, so you can spend more time doing the things you love.

As an Senior Approvals Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of responsible mining at Alcoa and your expertise will be critical in assessing potential environmental impacts, developing mitigation strategies and securing approvals. In this role, you will work collaboratively with project teams, government agencies and stakeholders to facilitate the approvals process and promote environmentally and socially responsible practices.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting thorough assessments of project proposals to identify potential environmental risks and regulatory requirements.

  • Overseeing the preparation and submission of applications for environmental approvals, in accordance with Part IV of the EP Act and the EPBC Act.

  • Engaging with regulatory authorities, EPA, DWER and DCCEEW to facilitate the approvals process and address any queries or concerns.

  • Collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to develop effective environmental assessment and mitigation measures.

  • Providing guidance and support to project teams on compliance with environmental regulations and best practices.

  • Staying abreast of changes to environmental legislation and regulatory requirements, in particular the Nature Positive Reforms, and advise the Approvals Manager – Part IV/EPBC on potential implications for projects, and managing the Response to Submissions phase of the Part IV environmental approval processes.

What you can bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or related fields of study.

  • Substantial experience in supporting environmental approvals processes in industry, Government or within an environmental consultancy context with a specific focus on the EPBC Act.

  • Strong understanding of Commonwealth and Western Australian environmental legislation, regulations, and approval processes.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to make sound, logical and balanced judgements.

About the Location

Alcoa Australia is currently located in Booragoon, WA, but will be relocating to the western end of St Georges Terrace in Perth CBD in Q3 2025. The Booragoon office is situated on Whadjuk Noongar land, 16 kilometres away from Perth's CBD. The office is situated next to Garden City and hosts employees from across several business units, including Commercial, Finance, Sustainability, Communications, Human Resources and the Global Refinery of the Future team.
