THE ROLE:
We are seeking a dynamic and energetic Component Engineer to join our Systems Design Engineering team. In this high-visibility role, you will play a key part in selecting, evaluating, and managing electronic components that enable AMD's industry-leading technologies. You will contribute directly to product development, manufacturing, and problem resolution, ensuring our components meet technical specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Source and evaluate new electronic components; provide guidance for component selection.
- Identify and analyze alternate components for End-of-Life (EOL) replacements, design updates, or cost reduction opportunities.
- Create and maintain EP part numbers in the system; manage component change requests.
- Coordinate testing and qualification of custom components for EMI and SI performance.
- Support component-related production issues, including quality concerns, shortages, and discrepant material.
- Maintain and manage the Approved Vendor List (AVL) and Sample Library.
- Oversee component quotations and database maintenance.
- Support cost-reduction initiatives and inventory reduction efforts through consolidation and periodic reviews.
- Participate in preliminary and production BOM reviews.
- Coordinate parts management between corporate and local databases.
- Raise Engineering Change Requests to communicate obsolescence or performance issues.
- Conduct deep-dive analysis on non-direct (non-FFF) replacement parts.
- Evaluate technical feasibility of new manufacturers and coordinate business feasibility with Supply Chain.
- Facilitate discussions between manufacturers and design engineering teams regarding part failures, roadmaps, and other issues.
- Provide component management support for Contract Manufacturers (CMs).
- Mentor and train team members; share expertise across the organization.
- Drive technical innovation in validation, tool and script development, methodology enhancement, and cross-functional initiatives.
- Work closely with supporting technical teams to resolve issues and optimize processes.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Strong background in component selection and technology assessment.
- Knowledge of component manufacturing, qualification, and reliability evaluation.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance (RoHS, HF) and exemption certifications.
- Understanding of PCB assembly processes.
- Experience with PLM systems (e.g., e-Matrix, Agile).
- Strong collaboration, accountability, and teamwork mindset.
- Proficiency in Excel and the Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience with third-party obsolescence databases (e.g., IHS) is a plus.
- Expertise in Engineering Change Orders (ECO) and Change Requests.
- Experience assessing and recommending electrical and electro-mechanical components.
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering preferred; Master's degree desired.
