Position Summary  

The Cook 1 performs skilled cooking and food preparation duties under the direction of the Retail/Food Service Supervisor and leadership of Cook 2, ensuring food is prepared and ready for daily service and future needs. This position also oversees student workers by assigning tasks, providing instruction, and reviewing their work. 

This is 11-month cyclical position and reports to the Retail/Food Service Supervisor.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: 39,012/year - $51,576/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employee Association of Higher Education (WPEA-HE).

About the Department  

Bellevue College (BC) Food Services serves the college main campus by offering a full service cafeteria, three coffee shops and a Pizza Cafe (Housing) that serve hot food, light snacks, pastries, espresso, tea and beverages.

Essential Functions  

Perform skilled cooking and food preparation.  

  • Participates in large-scale food preparation and service during assigned shifts; anticipates and completes advance preparation for the following day¿s meals.
  • Prepares food items according to standard menus, recipes, and verbal instructions, including salads, desserts, beverages, quick breads, vegetables, and salad bar items.
  • Operates kitchen equipment such as mixers, ovens, choppers, shredders, steamers, grills, grinders, steam kettles, fryers, and meat/cheese slicers.
  • Leads and participates in cleaning kitchen areas and equipment, ensuring sanitation and safety standards are met.
  • Supervises and trains student workers.
  • Adjust recipes based on volume and service needs as instructed by Cook 2.
  • Leads and participates in proper storage, rotation, and utilization of leftovers and ingredients.
  • Provides effective customer service to students, employees, and visitors.

Catering

  • Assists with food preparation and set up catering events.
  • Works under the leadership of Cook 2 to ensure catering supplies, food items, and equipment are prepared and ready for events.
  • Communicates and works with the Catering Supervisor regarding event details.

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • High school diploma or equivalent education/experience.
  • One (1) year of cooking experience in a large-scale food service or culinary operation.
  • Knowledge of food values and nutrition, personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of proper care and use of kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills and the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated effective customer service skills when working with employees, students, and visitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Must obtain a King County Food Handler¿s Permit within fourteen (14) days of hire.
  • Experience working with diverse colleagues and students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in cooking or food preparation in a large-scale food service setting.
