Position Summary  

Bellevue College's Custodial Supervisor maintains the Bellevue College's facilities and buildings and ensures the cleanliness, safe and welcoming environment for the students, visitors, and staff.  
 
The position reports to the Operations Manager. The Custodial Supervisor is a working custodian who directs and supervises the custodial staff at Bellevue College involving the assignment and direct supervision of custodial employees in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of buildings, offices, classrooms, fitness centers, dorm, laboratories, furnishings and equipment as well as building entrances and exterior walkways.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $45,600/year - $61,008/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WFSE Collective Bargaining Agreement.

About the Department  

The Bellevue College (BC) Custodial Services Department within Campus Operations supports the College's primary mission by cleaning and maintaining internal and external areas of all College Facilities and other assets. The department works in compliance with local, state and federal laws and agencies by following BC's policies, follows and maintains safety procedures and follow-up Campus Operations program on accidents and safety prevention techniques. The department also follows APPA's Operational Guidelines as well as continuously improves work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through participation in routine training sessions.

Essential Functions  

Custodial Staff Supervision

  • Direct and supervise Bellevue College's custodial staff in the care, cleaning, disinfecting and upkeep of facilities.
  • Evaluate, inspects and trains the custodial staff on the cleaning of the buildings according to APPA's Operational Guidelines.
  • Set daily, monthly and annual schedule of cleaning and detail cleaning for custodial crew delegating tasks as appropriate and ensuring deadlines are met and projects are complete in a timely manner and to an established standard.  
  • Supervise and participate in routine and details cleaning (cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting offices, rooms, labs, common areas, showers and restrooms, sweeping, moping, vacuuming, scrubbing, wax and polish floors, walls and woodwork, shampoo and extract carpets, pressure wash, dusts furniture and equipment; empties wastebaskets, trash, recycle and compost containers.
  • Ensure the custodial staff has all equipment needed to perform custodial tasks, evaluate the equipment that is in proper working condition, perform and schedule repairs as needed.  
  • Ensures the custodial staff has all supplies, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals needed to perform custodial tasks, to complete daily work, work requests and perform other custodial cleaning tasks as needed.
  • Ensure all custodial storage closets are clean, organized and stocked accordingly. 
  • Maintain ongoing practices with the custodial staff to determines that needs are met and assigned work is being performed accordingly.
  • Adjusts workloads to compensate for scheduled and unscheduled absences, changing priorities and special custodial projects. 
  • Train new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, cleaning solvents, electrically-powered machines and other related supplies and tools.
  • Determines staffing needs for buildings; oversees activities in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Advises the Operations Manager on the condition of College buildings and facilities by conducting regular inspections of those areas and reporting the results of the inspections with particular emphasis on needed repairs.
  • Ensures that administrative records and reports regarding custodial personnel are accurate and current by reviewing employee's time sheets and monitoring employee absences.

Evaluates Custodial Effectiveness and Administrative work

  • Develop departmental procedures and policies, monitor budget, and prepare reports and maintains records as needed.  
  • Instruct the custodial staff in the proper methods and use of materials and equipment for safe and efficient work performance, evaluating individual performances to meet established standards.  
  • Interview, hire, train, onboard new staff and recommend discipline as needed.  
  • Work with Operations Manager to evaluate the total work of employees against established standards, and suggests improvements.
  • Update procedures as work develops and/or when handling new equipment and supply.
  • Order supply, equipment and materials required by custodial departments as needed with the Operations Managers approval.  
  • Meet with departmental heads to discuss updates with work being performed, discuss overlapping work priorities and projects, and other projects and priorities needed to ensure the Colleges needs are being met. 
  • Assist Campus Operations managements, supervisors, coordinators and other personal serving as point of contact for work being performed on campus as appropriate.
  • Assist Construction Manager, Operations Manager, Maintenance Manager, Supervisor, and Executive Director in working with contractors on campus building projects per need.  

Comply with laws and Bellevue College (BC) procedures

  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal laws and agencies by following BC's policies, procedures and will advise the direction for the custodial department accordingly. 
  • Work with the Operations Manager to ensure the custodial crew maintains safety procedures as instructed and trained, will ensure the custodial crew maintains the program on accidents and safety prevention techniques.
  • Maintains other BC policies and procedures relating to the custodial department.

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Performs custodial duties if needed.
  • Assist with College sponsored events, participation in department events (overtime work). 
Minimum Qualifications  
  • At least three (3) years Custodial/Janitorial experience in facilities management at Higher Education or K-12. 
  • At least two (2) years of Supervisory experience in facilities management at Higher Education or K-12.  
  • Experience operating and maintaining commercial equipment (upright/backpack vacuums, blowers, disinfecting devices, scrubbers, upholstery cleaners, buffing machines, water extractors, carpet shampooers, pressure washers)
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook to read and respond to email and electronic work requests.
  • Effective communication, problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Experience inspecting buildings to determine cleaning needs and analyzing workloads.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse environment with demonstrated flexibility and composure.
  • Have a valid Washington driver license or ability to obtain one upon employment.
  • Ability to work well in small or large groups and independently.

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings to other coworkers, other employees of the College, students, and visitors of the College.
  • Ability to observe and learn new and different techniques related to the performance and outcomes of work-related tasks.

  • Ability to adapt to changing business needs, conditions and work responsibilities.
