Job Description:

Serving as a member of the Division's senior leadership team, the Associate Director of Athletics for Human Resources and Professional Development (“Associate AD”) oversees all of the human resources and professional development functions and drives the short and long-term workforce management strategies within the Division of Athletics and Recreation.  The Associate AD will implement human resources strategies that include non-exempt and exempt staff, department managers, head and assistant coaches, direct administrative support staff, student assistants, regular and seasonal employees, and independent contractors.  Strategies include recruitment and retention, compensation and benefits, onboarding and offboarding, talent development and performance management, employee and labor relations, student employment, records management, employee succession planning, and other related human resource functions. 

The position will work closely and proactively with University Human Resources to successfully manage employee relations matters and ensure compliance with relevant federal and state laws and regulations, NCAA, Ivy League, and university policies proper procedures.  The Associate AD also serves as a central point of contact for business processes and operations relating to human resources.

The Associate AD works with hiring managers and coaches to cultivate the division's ability to recruit and retain employees through workforce management best practices, peer benchmarking and compensation analysis, talent and professional development, and a deeply shared commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  The Associate AD will assist the Deputy AD for Finance and External Services/CFO and other senior leaders with development and facilitation of search committees, contract development and negotiation for the hiring and retaining of coaches and staff, and identifying strategic partnerships to improve the overall employee experience.

The Associate AD will develop systems to regularly assess and implement programming to improve organizational culture and morale, ensuring a positive, inclusive, and diverse work environment for all.  Programming will specifically focus on regular and consistent talent and professional development, leadership training, and cultural assessments for the senior leadership team, managers, and coaches.  In addition, this position would assist the student services areas to develop a professional development program for all student-athletes, including DEI programing.

The Associate AD may also serve as the primary and/or secondary program administrator for select varsity sports.


  • Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience

Experience and Job Competencies

  • Seven to 10 years of progressive human resources management and leadership experience required
  • Prior experience in the higher education setting or similarly complex organization is required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written; tactful, direct, and demonstrated ability to present data and communicate effectively with diverse campus groups.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to effectively influence policies and programs
  • Prior experience in consulting with internal clients on some combination of recruitment, compensation, organizational, talent development
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ADA).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated track record of building and maintaining a diverse workforce and an equitable and inclusive workplace
  • Strong commitment to supporting the University's goals of cultivating a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines; flexible in dealing with changes in approach and deliverables.
  • Strong systems skills, including Microsoft Office suite, database, and resource planning systems.
  • Demonstrated an aptitude for team building, change management, and process development skills.
  • Membership in the Society of Human Resources Management or College & University Professional Association for Human Resources preferred but is not required. 
  • The successful candidate for this position will be required to complete a criminal background, education and DMV checks satisfactory to Brown University prior to commencing employment.
