Description

As a historical interpreter, you will bring history to life and create meaningful experiences for others. This role is supported by the Beyond Belonging: Building a 2SLGBTQIA+ Safe Spaces Action Plan, which is a commitment to building a safer, more inclusive Edmonton, where every person can live authentically and without fear. We are looking for people who are passionate about the past and love to tell stories, teach, and share their community's experiences with the public.

What will you do?

  • Assist in researching and developing new 2SLGBTQIA+ narratives and programs in collaborating with internal interest holders and external community partners (Edmonton Queer History Project, for example)
  • Interpret diverse histories to the visiting public, using a variety of methods such as conversation, re-enactment, role-playing, tours, and hands-on activities/demonstrations
  • Actively contribute to the goals of the Beyond Belonging Action Plan by developing interpretive content that enhances safety, reduces barriers, addresses discrimination, and fosters inclusion for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in Edmonton.
  • Assist in supporting and mentoring colleagues and volunteers
  • Navigate the scope of the public's questions and perspectives inclusively and respectfully, while also recognizing your right to the same
  • Assist with high-volume special events
  • Assist in the maintenance of artifacts and program supplies
  • Collect statistical information, document programs, and assist in evaluation of related projects, as required
  • Lead programs for pre-registered groups, as required
  • Participate in outreach, media engagements, public events, and other functions, as required
  • Complete other duties, as required
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalent
  • Experience in working with the general public, tour groups, children and other program users

Asset:

  • Knowledge of and networks within Edmonton's 2SLGBTQIA+ communities
  • Some experience with related 2SLGBTQIA+ community networks and activities
  • Experience working in a museum, cultural centre, or historic site
  • Ability to converse in a second language

Skills required for success:

  • Some experience with program delivery for the general public, tour groups, children and other program users
  • Highly developed interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including the ability to manage potentially sensitive situations
  • Specialized knowledge of Edmonton's 2SLGBTQIA+ histories and culture

Conditions of Employment:

  • Current Intermediate First Aid & CPR, and AED prior to commencing employment
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, as required

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states

Up to 1 temporary, part-time position for up to 5 months (May to September)

Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours per week, Wednesday - Sunday, weekends, evenings, and holidays, as required, from May to August. 

Salary: $21.918 - $26.183 (Hourly)
