Lead the transformation of a great city's neighbourhoods and open spaces!

This influential leadership position, reporting to the Branch Manager, Building Great Neighbourhoods, offers a dual-faceted opportunity to shape the future of Integrated Infrastructure Services. As a core member of the Branch Leadership Team, you will be instrumental in achieving strategic goals, developing key priorities, and setting the overall direction for the Branch. Furthermore, this role entails the strategic development and alignment of resources necessary to successfully execute the area's mandate, ensuring complete alignment with the Branch, Department, Corporate Business Plans, ConnectEdmonton, and the City Plan.

Operating within an integrated business model, the Director, Neighbourhoods and Open Spaces Infrastructure Delivery holds the critical accountability for the delivery of all neighbourhood and open space capital projects. This extensive portfolio includes the Neighbourhood Renewal Program, the Alley Renewal Program, and the development of both neighbourhood and district parks. The scope of work also spans trails and shared-use paths with related foundational structures, playgrounds, spray parks, sports fields, lighting, active modes infrastructure, complex erosion and structural remediation, environmental clean-up and landfill closures, Low Impact Development, Community-Led projects, and cemetery projects at City-owned facilities.

You will be responsible for providing leadership and strategic management to a dedicated team. This includes direct reporting relationships with 5 Supervisors, and indirect oversight for over 40 staff, in addition to managing a variety of external consultants and contractors. The Director specifically guides four distinct business units whose primary focus areas are project management excellence, sustainability management, and public communications.

What will you do?

  • Provide leadership and strategic management in delivering Project Management excellence and best practices
  • Lead by example, fostering a positive and collaborative team culture that aligns with organizational values and empowers staff to achieve excellence
  • Coach, mentor, develop and lead a team of over 40 employees in creating action plans to foster communication, promote integration and collaboration, and support excellence in alignment with the Modern Municipal Corporation Framework and the corporation's cultural commitments
  • Deliver projects in multi-year capital plans to support the growth and renewal of open space infrastructure in the city, including the River Valley Systems, Parks, Open Spaces (i.e. Golf Courses, Cemeteries, etc), Environmental, Soft Landscaping and Partner Projects
  • Ensure financial resources are used prudently and effectively in the delivery of the Section's work (in accordance with the Project Development and Delivery Model)
  • Craft and implement forward-thinking strategies and improvements for the Branch, translating high-level goals into actionable plans for the Neighbourhoods and Open Spaces Infrastructure Delivery Section.
  • Support the Branch Manager, the Deputy City Manager and Council by overseeing the provision and development of information and reports that allow them to make informed decisions
  • Develop collaborative and influential relationships with clients and other partners internal and external to the City
  • Drive fiscal sustainability, continuous improvement and consistency in systems and processes through expert change management, overseeing the development and implementation of multi-year capital plans for the Building Great Neighbourhoods program
  • Continue to build multi-year partnerships with communities and collaborate extensively with partners, while advancing the goals and priorities of the City's ConnectEdmonton and City Plan and balancing fiscal responsibility
  • Anticipate business opportunities, influence policy, planning and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through data, performance measurement and evaluation
