Description

Are you passionate about shaping the way a vibrant city moves? The City of Edmonton is looking for a dedicated technical professional to join our Traffic Operations team. As an Engineering Technologist I, you will play a vital role in ensuring our streets remain safe and accessible for everyone—whether they are walking, cycling, or driving. This is your opportunity to apply your technical expertise to real-world challenges, from coordinating major construction detours to designing the permanent markings that guide our community every day. Come help us build a safe, functional, and reliable transportation network for all Edmontonians.

In this dynamic role, you will provide essential technical support in temporary traffic control across the city's roadway network. You will be the go-to expert for reviewing and approving road use permits, ensuring that construction projects and special events proceed without compromising public safety. Working within an assigned geographical area, you will collaborate closely with a diverse team of engineers, field staff, and community partners to manage traffic flow effectively. Your day-to-day will involve a blend of detailed office work like drafting engineering drawings and preparing cost estimates to active field inspections to verify that traffic controls meet our high standards. You will also serve as a key communicator, responding to inquiries from the public and city leadership with professional, clear, and helpful information. Ultimately, your work ensures that our bylaws and safety guidelines are upheld, keeping Edmonton moving smoothly.

What will you do?

  • Collaborate with roadway designers, project managers, and engineering consultants to make critical decisions regarding temporary traffic control for various projects to ensure the safety and efficiency of the transportation system
  • Create traffic accommodation plans (TAPs) for detours, which involves drafting engineering drawings and preparing cost estimates for installation or removal
  • Perform regular field inspections to assess and review temporary traffic controls, following up with the required documentation and action items in accordance with established guidelines
  • Provide essential guidance and direction to field crews and external collaborators on the proper placement of traffic control devices to meet rigorous safety standards
  • Approve temporary road use permits for on-street construction and detour requests by applying technical knowledge of construction techniques and traffic flow requirements
  • Represent the branch at pre-construction meetings and community sessions to determine traffic control requirements based on roadway capacities
  • Contribute to the updating of traffic bylaws, the Manual of Temporary Traffic Control, and engineering standards related to signs and pavement markings
  • Address inquiries from interested and affected parties, including the general public and city leadership, by ensuring all correspondence is professional and contains in-depth information
