The City of Edmonton is launching a critical, grant-funded irrigation controller improvement project to enhance the water management of irrigated sportsfields sites in response to climate change,increasing drought frequency, and a growing necessity for responsible resource management.
As the Landscape Technician I supporting this initiative, you will be crucial in ensuring its successful implementation and seamless handover to operations teams. Your primary focus will be on facilitating collaboration and communication between internal teams and contractors, preparing comprehensive documentation (including operation, maintenance, and best practices manuals), and performing detailed asset management and data capture across all Sports Fields sites.
What will you do?
- Collect information and data from the internal project team and direct contractor to guide the work
- Relay questions and facilitating collaboration between the contract team and internal teams
- Facilitate communication among stakeholders, leveraging subject matter expertise to direct work
- Ensure the installation minimizes impact on user groups and community members
- Prepare operation instructions and manuals for handover to operations staff
- Gather relevant documents, drawings, vendor manuals, and vendor support contacts
- Prepare an accurate inventory list of all installed controllers, including exact equipment specifications
- Create a GIS layer to identify the precise locations of infrastructure like controllers, sprinkler heads, and zones
- Audit all Sports Fields sites to identify and capture assets in a spreadsheet or on ArcGIS
- Collaborate with Facility Maintenance Services to prepare an irrigation maintenance manual
- Help develop a best practices manual for irrigation, focusing on how to reduce water usage while maintaining turf conditions and high-quality playing surfaces, and reducing labor time
- Other duties as assigned
- Completion of a 2 year diploma in Horticulture, Turf management, Environmental Sciences or a related field
- A minimum of 2 years of hands on technical experience with irrigation systems, golf course/sports field maintenance or related experience
Assets:
- Experience in parks, sportsfields, golf course maintenance
- Geospatial/GIS Certification or Diploma
Skills required for Success:
- Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings and specifications to determine work requirements
- Ability to install, operate, repair and maintain irrigation systems
- Ability to act as an Irrigation Subject Matter Expert
- Technological proficiency; using various software including irrigation smart controller software, ArcGIS,
- Excellent communication skills, with an ability to facilitate collaboration between various stakeholders
- Project coordination skills, ability to ensure timely deliverables
- Ability to work alone coordinating contractor work

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
Work Environment:
- The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
- This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 20 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
- Note: Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
