
Description
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is seeking a skilled and motivated lawyer to join the Professional Standards Branch (PSB). This role requires a strong background in administrative law, preferably with a focus on police disciplinary processes. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to provide legal advice and support to PSB. Other duties include:
- Handle various aspects of the police disciplinary process.
- Develop policy and strategies for PSB.
- Liaise with EPS Legal Advisors Section and Human Resources.
- Work with external stakeholders, external counsel and the Edmonton Police Association.
- Represent EPS at Disciplinary Hearings, the Edmonton Police Commission and the Alberta Human Rights Commission.
- Handle other litigation and advisory matters as needed.
- Provide legal advice to all members of PSB to ensure thorough, timely and fair investigations meet the requirements of the Police Act.
- Review disposition materials to ensure they withstand legal scrutiny.
- Coordinate with Alberta Justice regarding investigations, particularly those that result in the prosecution of a sworn member.
The successful candidate must have a strong desire to learn and grow professionally, a keen interest in policing and criminal justice issues, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic and varied work environment. Due to recent changes in the regulatory framework governing police discipline, the responsibilities of this position are expected to evolve over the next one or two years. Therefore, the successful candidate must be adaptable, proactive, and open to change, with the capacity to navigate shifting legal and operational landscapes.
