Join the City of Edmonton's Infrastructure Services team as a Project Engineer-in-Training (EIT) within the Transportation Delivery Section. This role offers the opportunity to kickstart your career and gain professional designation hours while contributing to essential city infrastructure. Under the guidance of senior mentors, you will engage in the design, tender preparation, and contract management of transportation projects—ranging from managing local projects under $5M to supporting complex, high-profile initiatives. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve technical challenges and help build Edmonton's future.

What will you do?

  • Assist in managing the detailed design, procurement, and delivery of transportation projects using best practices and PMBOK principles
  • Help define project goals, objectives, and deliverables to fulfill the requirements of Business Partners and Project Sponsors
  • Monitor and report on project milestones through detailed plans and schedules, learning to keep projects on budget, on schedule, and within scope
  • Work with and learn to lead multi-disciplinary teams consisting of consultants, contractors, clients, and internal partners
  • Assist in implementing robust public/partner engagement processes and communication plans in collaboration with the Communications & Engagement (C&E) team
  • Apply and expand your technical engineering knowledge to anticipate and resolve issues, including participating in field design and re-design under professional oversight
  • Review and help prepare critical project documentation, including feasibility studies, design reports, tenders, drawings, and engineering specifications
  • Assist with contract and procurement processes, including preparing tender documents, reviewing proposals/bids, and monitoring the work of external consultants and contractors
  • Perform project risk assessments and steward necessary relationships to support project success
  • Handle project closing activities, such as obtaining sign-offs, conducting post-project evaluations, capturing lessons learned, and managing deficiencies during the warranty phase
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or related field of Transportation Engineering
  • Must be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA (in good standing) and working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation

Skills required for success:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to effectively communicate with a wide range of both technical and non-technical parties
  • Proven planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to exercise sound engineering judgment and make appropriate technical recommendations

Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Conditions of employment:

  • Up to: 2 permanent full-time positions
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $35.60 - $43.271 (Hourly); $74,332.80 - $90,349.85 (Annually)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
