A Day in the Life of a Director of Facilities Management

The Director of Facilities Management oversees the maintenance, engineering, and safety operations that support the hospital's physical environment and infrastructure. This role ensures all systems—from HVAC to life safety—operate reliably, safely, and in compliance with Joint Commission, NFPA, and CMS standards. The director leads a skilled team in preventive maintenance, construction planning, and capital project execution while managing vendor and regulatory relationships. As the organization's Safety Officer, this leader directs emergency preparedness and environment of care programs with authority to act swiftly on safety concerns. Collaboration with hospital leadership is essential to balance operational needs, compliance, and long-term facility planning.


About the Plant Operations Department Maintaining Systems, Powering Care

In the Plant Operations Department at CRMC, we ensure that every system, structure, and service within the hospital functions safely and efficiently. From heating, cooling, and electrical systems to plumbing, security, and infrastructure maintenance, our team is responsible for keeping the hospital fully operational 24/7. Whether responding to emergency repairs, upgrading essential systems, or ensuring compliance with life safety codes, we work behind the scenes to create a safe, reliable environment where patients receive care and staff can perform at their best.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, or a related field
    • In lieu of a Bachelor's degree, candidates with an Associate's degree and 10+ years of relevant experience in facilities management, preferably within a healthcare setting, will be considered. This experience should include demonstrated leadership, project management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of supervisory experience in facilities, engineering, or maintenance
  • Proven project management experience including oversight of construction/renovation projects, interpretation of blueprints and design documents, and coordination with contractors, architects, and engineers.
  • Valid Minnesota driver's license
Preferred
  • Master's degree
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission standards, NFPA guidelines, and CMS requirements for healthcare facilities
  • First Class C Minnesota Boiler license

 

Compensation and Benefits

The pay range listed above is the estimated starting pay range for this role. Actual pay rate offered depends on many factors including each individual's experience level, preferred education/certifications, along with market conditions.
