Job Description

Farm is located an hour from Boston in scenic Hollis, New Hampshire. Our unique facilities consist of a modern development center and a business center located in a restored circa 1740s colonial farm house. The open workspaces are set up to encourage collaboration between our engineers, industrial designers, and researchers. Our two shops provide workspace for machining, assembly, testing, and model-making.

Farm's dynamic setting aligns with our small company culture, making it a great place to work. We are an active and creative company.  Many of us take advantage of the nearby hiking trails, mountain biking trails, basketball courts, tennis courts, sports fields and ski areas.

The Mechanical Engineer Co-Op will be based in Hollis, NH. Seeking an exceptional engineering student to join our product development group. This position is a unique opportunity to contribute to the creative process that drives new product development. Candidates will learn effective brainstorming, design for manufacturing, prototyping, and documentation as they apply their engineering knowledge to real world problems. A motivated student will thrive in Farm's fast paced environment as they participate in all aspects of the design process.

Here is a glimpse of what you will do…

  • Participate in concept development brainstorming
  • Assist in designing products, parts, mechanisms, assemblies, and fixtures
  • Application of general engineering principles
  • Concept review and down selection
  • Generation of 3D CAD database using SolidWorks or Creo
  • Research and selection of materials
  • Analysis of parts / assemblies (FEA, Tolerances, Thermal, and Fluid)
  • Generate 2D mechanical drawings, presentations, and reports to convey the product development solution to management, outside vendors, and clients
  • Fabricate and assemble prototypes using machine and hand tools
  • Test and evaluate prototype designs with test equipment and data acquisition software
  • Communicate with vendors to procure components and prototype parts
  • Work with industrial design and user research to understand end-user needs and implement appropriate solutions

Here is some of what you will need (required)…

  • Junior or Senior student attending an accredited 4-year university
  • Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering student with a strong mechanical background
  • 3.0 GPA minimum
  • Passion to learn, contribute, and take on challenges
  • Proficient in mechanical 3D CAD (SolidWorks or Pro/Engineer strongly preferred)
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, mature, and a team player
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrated mechanical proficiency

Here are a few of our preferred experiences…

  • Freehand sketching ability
  • Machine shop skills (Mill/Lathe)
  • Advanced 3D CAD modeling (master/skeleton modeling, surfacing)
  • Knowledge of injection molding and metal processing methods
  • Previous experience in a consulting or other fast paced environment
  • Experience setting up and running DOE's
  • Ability to perform basic tolerance analysis
  • Robotics/Mechatronics experience
  • LabVIEW experience
